Don’t you just love clothing items that can do double (or 10x) duty? I know I do. We’re spending our hard-earned cash on these pieces, so it’s great to get extra bang for our buck! When purchasing items, I always try to envision at least 3 ways I can wear the new piece with existing pieces in my wardrobe. This ensures the new piece will play nicely with the items already in our closets.
Striped shirts are having a moment lately. When you stop to think about it, it makes sense. They are super versatile. Stripes are really a new neutral. Not only can they be paired with everything, they can be styled to be casual or dressy and everything in between!

When seasons change it’s always nice to buy a few new pieces to refresh our wardrobes. If we keep adding items without getting rid of others, our closets can get very congested and overcrowded. An option to prevent this from happening is to follow the one-in one-out rule. I talked about this briefly in a post here. As a refresher, the one-in one-out rule is when we bring a new piece into our wardrobe, another piece is removed.
I’ve recently bought some new spring items, so I thought it would be fun to share with you how I follow this rule in my own life. I never buy new hangers, which forces me to make sure I adhere to the one-in one-out rule. Let’s get into it!

Spring has sprung! I’ve been seeing daffodils in bloom everywhere. Trees are starting to bud, birds are chirping, and the grass is greening up. The world is coming back to life. I love it!
Spring is a great time to also get back outside and enjoy the beautiful nature surrounding us. Breath in the fresh air and get all that winter dust and darkness out. It’s a time to refresh and reset the soul. What a better way to do that than to go for a hike.
A hike you ask? Yes, let’s go for a hike! But what should we wear? Great question! It can be difficult to figure out what to wear for a hike (or any outdoor activity for that matter). I’ve come up with a few fool-proof tips to make sure you dress for comfort on your next outdoor adventure! Let’s dive in!
Tip 1: Check the Temperature
Through trial and error, I’ve determined that the tipping point temperature is 70 degrees.
Under 70 degrees I would suggest wearing the following:
Short sleeve shirt
Over 70 degrees I would recommend wearing the following:
Capris or shorts
Short sleeve shirt or tank top
Throw on a baseball cap and you’re good to go!
Tip 2: Layer, layer, layer
Layering is the key to comfort. Even checking the temperature beforehand you can never really tell how it will feel out on the trail. It might be under 70 degrees, but what if it’s sunny and bright. Shedding that jacket might be just what the doctor ordered.
Tip 3: Choosing the right shoes
Choosing the right footwear can be challenging as well. Knowing the trail makeup can really help take the guessing out of what to put on your feet.
Paved Trails: Regular tennis shoes should fit the bill
Unpaved trails: Hiking shoes are a great option on these surfaces (similar)
Mountainous or rough terrain: Hiking boots are in order (similar)
On another note, I would highly recommend changing into flip-flops or sandals when you’ve finished your hike. Why you might ask? Let me illustrate with a story. One beautiful autumn afternoon, I decided to go for a hike with my dog. The air was warm, but not hot. The cool breeze was blowing through the trees of red and orange. The fall wildflowers were in full bloom. It was a great hike. The trail was about an hour from our home. We were about home and all-of-a-sudden my legs felt like they were on FIRE! Seriously, on fire. They itched so badly. Turns out I had a really bad case of chiggers. Had I taken off my shoes and socks after the hike, I may have been able to prevent the infestation. Even if you don’t encounter chiggers, who knows what you may brush up against in the woods. Poison ivy, anyone? Case in point, remove your socks and shoes after hiking.
Tip 4: Hiking Essentials
Now that we know what to wear, what should we bring? We may think nothing, but there are a few things we want to make sure we have with us on the trail.
Whistle: Yes, a whistle. In case you get into any trouble, just three short blows indicates an emergency. (here)
Water: Make sure you have plenty of water. It’s recommended to drink 1/2 to 1 liter of water every hour on hot humid days. It’s still important to drink water on chilly days, too, although you may need less than indicated above. If you’re bringing your dog along, make sure you have plenty of water for them too!
First Aid Kit: Safety first! You can make your own or purchase one from the nearest drug store. There are plenty of light and compact options out there. (here)
Binoculars: Who knows what wildlife you may run into! (here)
Granola bars: Make sure you have a source of energy out there on the trail.
Backpack: You’re going to need something to carry all this stuff in! (here)

We all need to shop for clothes. Regardless of whether we like shopping or not, it’s a thing we have to do.
There are times shopping for clothes can be fun, but it can also be super stressful. The busy malls, the fitting room mirrors that lie, sifting through racks and racks of items only to find something you like but not in your size, etc etc.
I’ve certainly wandered aimlessly and depressed through many a clothing store with little hope that I’ll ever be able to find what I want.
There’s got to be a better way.
Six years ago, I broke my ankle and I broke it badly. I was down for the count for a couple months. No shopping for me. What’s a girl to do? Up until this point in my life, I had been vehemently opposed to online shopping. I insisted I must try on each clothing item before purchasing them. Being homebound, though, I caved and downloaded the JCPenney app.
From then on, I was hooked. Do you mean to tell me I can scroll through hundreds of items filtered by my size and item type of choice…in a matter of minutes…from the comfort of my couch? Yes, please! I’ve never looked back.
Once I found the joy and ease of online shopping, I needed a few go-to sites. Of course, I relied (and still do) on Target, JCP, and thredUP. My quest for fabulous (and inexpensive) online clothing sites has never ceased, though.
The other day I was reading a blog post on J’s Everyday Fashion (check out the post here). Now when J shares a favorite find, I listen. She has stellar taste plus she’s a fellow Kansas girl. If you haven’t checked out her blog, do yourself a favor and head on over there. You’ll love it! Anyway, J was talking about an online clothing shop called Jane.com. She shared a few of her finds and they were super cute and super budget friendly. I had to check it out.
So what is this Jane.com online store? According to their website, they describe themselves like this: “Jane.com is a very beautiful boutique marketplace featuring the latest in women’s fashion trends, home decor, and children’s clothing.” As their description mentions, they not only have adorable and affordable women’s fashion, they also have jewlery, home decor items and children’s clothing. What more could you ask for?
I’ve placed a few orders so far using their app. The app is super easy to use and most items feature multiple pictures so you can really get a good look at them. Because Jane.com sells items from different boutiques, shipping is calcualated per item. That is a little different than most of us are used to. However, this is not a deal breaker by any means. Shipping is usually a couple bucks per item. The prices are so low, that adding an extra $2-$3 still makes them a great deal. Returns are a breeze too, although, again, you need to deal with each boutique seperately.Below are the items I’ve purcahsed so far. Enjoy!

So this winter was LOOONG! I don’t know about you, but I had some serious cabin fever setting in. Not just for sunny skies and warm breezes, but for bright clothes and shoes that weren’t boots.
At long last, we can finally start digging into our spring style. Today, I opted for my quintessential spring shirt (see it in another post here), jeans, and my new pink espadrilles. I didn’t even wear a jacket. It was fabulous!

Today we’re going to be talking body type. Ugh, I know. This can be a touchy and unpleasant subject. The rewards, though, are well worth it.
Knowing our body type can really help us determine what flatters our figure. Gone will be the days of being frustrated and discouraged by our clothes. Instead, we’ll be able to throw on anything in our closets and look fabulous.
Before we dive in, let’s remember that all body types are beautiful and should be celebrated. We might not all be where we want to be and that’s okay. We are what we are and we’re fabulous!
So, how exactly do we figure out what body type we are? When I found this infographic on whowhatwear.com, I just knew I had to share it with you lovelies! Finding out your body type is so easy!
As the infographic suggests, all we have to do is the following:
Measure the bust
Measure the hips
Measure the waist
Determine your body type
Rectangle: Your hips and bust are similar and less than 8″ bigger than your waist
Hourglass: Your hips and bust are similar and more than 8″ bigger than your waist
Apple: Your waist is larger than your bust and hips
Pear: Your hips are larger than your bust and waist
Inverted Triangle: Your bust is larger than your hips and waist
Now that we know our body type, we can do some research to determine what clothes will best flatter us. Not surprisingly, I take to Pinterest to do my searching. I’m a Rectangle, so I simply type in “rectangle body type” and up comes hundreds of articles and pictures to help you dress your best.
Today, let’s talk closets. I venture to say that most closets consist of clothes, shoes, purses, and the like strewn across the floor with clothes haphazardly hung on the closet rod and items carelessly thrown on the shelves like a small tornado roared through them. In other words, our closets are not exactly the prettiest places in our homes.
For some of us, myself included, clutter and messiness in our homes cause us anxiety. I never realized this also included the closet until I watched Lisa J’s Closet Tour and Organization Makeover Part I. She reminds us that whether we have a standard 2-rod setup or a walk-in closet the size of a small house, we spend a lot of time staring into our closets. Our closets are where we start our days. Why not start it them off on the right foot by looking into something clean and organized that makes us happy? Yes, that is some truth right there if I ever heard it! Let’s go organize our closet!
Step 1: Purge
As Lisa J shows in her video, the first step to a clean closet is to get rid of what you don’t need. For many of you, this will also be your first step. Since I just moved, my closet was mostly purged of the things that I don’t love and don’t fit. So, we’ll skip to step 2 here. Spend some time going through step 1, though, and make sure your closet is cleansed of what you don’t need. This will make the rest of the closet organization much easier. Lisa J goes through her process of getting rid of stuff in her video. Check it out if you need some inspiration!
Step 2: Diagnose the problem
Step 2 is identifying the problem areas. These are the areas of your closet that don’t function well for whatever reason. It might be that they have become a catch-all for things that don’t have a home or a space that has just gotten out-of-control or things of this nature. I have several such spaces in my closet.
Step 3: Organize
Step 3 is organizing and finding solutions for our problem areas. Lisa J’s video Closet Tour and Organization Makeover Part 2 is a great inspiration for this step in the process. She talks again about how having a clean, beautiful space really sets a positive tone for your day.
She also suggests having a theme. In her closet, she picked organizational items that were acrylic or linen. My bathroom has a beachy vibe, so I carried that theme into my closet. I chose items that were colorful and bright. While this isn’t a must-do, it will help pull the space together.
The first thing I did was make a trip to the Dollar Tree for some bin organizers. Pro tip, Dollar Tree has the best organizers! They have all types and sizes of bins in a rainbow of color choices. They also have linen baskets and a variety of acrylic bins. Check them out if you’re in need of some organization containers!
Now that we have our theme and containers, we can get to work!
This area was way out of control! Pursuing through Pinterest one day, I came across an idea of hanging purses on the closet rod from shower curtain hooks. Brilliant! I decided to give that a whirl with my smaller bags. I picked up the shower curtain hooks at Dollar Tree. I opted for decorative S-curve hooks (similar) as I thought they were prettier and would be easier to use. They worked like a charm! For my larger purses, I opted to place them in some larger plastic bins from Dollar Tree. They work great and are stylish and colorful as well.
On a side note, the pictures are stick-ons from Hobby Lobby (similar). I love how they dress up the space!
Since I moved my purses to this closet rod, I had empty space on the floor. I decided to utilize it by putting my shoes here. The shoe rack is from Target (similar). It’s two tiered or you can buy multiples and stack them on top of each other. It’s also adjustable lengthwise. In other words, this is a seriously customizable shoe rack!
I love my closet, but this particular spot is so weird. The rod curves here making it really hard to see the clothes that are hung in that area. To resolve the issue, I simply rearranged my clothes. Now, sweaters go on the left and my other shirts on the right. That way there aren’t bulky pieces in the curve making it easier to see everything!
Finally, the top shelf needed some TLC. My clothes to donate are now in the two linen blue bins in the left. My off-season clothes are in the clear bins (find them here). These are bins that are designed to be stored under the bed. They just happen to fit perfectly on the top shelf of the closet! As Lisa J mentions in her video, a step stool is essential if you have items on the top shelf. I have a two-step stool that folds up nicely and can be tucked in the corner (similar).
That’s my closet makeover! It’s so much nicer and more organized. I actually feel happy looking at it now!

Today, let’s chat about how to survive the freezing arctic air that’s enveloped our land. I assure you, we can be warm and still look cute. So, grab a hot beverage and a warm blanket and settle in!
Polar Vortex Essential Item #1: Cuddlies
Cuddlies are my top essential item for surviving the polar vortex. What are cuddlies you ask? Good question. Cuddlies are my cute word for long underwear or long johns, etc. I don’t care for those terms, so I coined my own. You’re welcome. I have a pair of cuddly pants and a cuddly long-sleeved shirt. The key is to make sure to choose a pair that’s thin (try these here). You don’t want anything too bulky. You also want to make sure they fit well. You don’t want anything super loose as you need to be able to layer other clothing on top. On the other hand, you don’t want anything too tight because you want your skin to be able to breathe and keep your blood flowing normally. There are tons of options out there, so pick one that fits your needs. They even have fleeced lined ones!
Polar Vortex Essential Item #2: Warm Socks
A pair of warm socks is another essential item for surviving the cold temperatures. Nothing quite works as well as a nice pair of wool socks. Wool is breathable and wicks moisture away from the skin. This is comfort at its finest! My favorites are from the Smartwool brand (here). You can even add some liners (here) for extra warmth. The key is to make sure you’re socks aren’t too tight on your feet and that your feet aren’t too tight in your shoes. The same principle as the cuddlies applies here as well. You want your skin to be able to breathe and your blood circulating normally. This will keep you warm!
Polar Vortex Essential Item #3: A Warm Outfit
Next up, we need a warm outfit. This is where we get to pull out our warmest of warm sweaters and pants. My go-to is a chunky sweater and skinny jeans. You could also opt for fleeced-lined leggings or wool slacks. Maybe you have a cashmere sweater that doesn’t get much use. Now would be the time to pull that baby out! Topping off your look with a scarf would be a great choice for a day like today.
Polar Vortex Essential Item #4: Outerwear
Outerwear includes things like coats, hats, gloves, etc. So pull out your warmest coat, preferably with a hood. Add a scarf, a stocking cap, and some warm gloves and you’ve got it made! Some people worry about their hair while wearing a stocking cap. Let me tell you, I feel that! I like to wear my hair as simple as possible to avoid too much damage from the hat. It doesn’t hurt to have a dryer sheet handy to calm any static cling that forms as well. Trust me, you’re hair will find it’s way back to its place and you’ll be so much warmer!
Polar Vortex Essential Item #5: Snow Pants
All the tips above will keep you warm for sure. We’re talking extreme cold here, though, so we’ll need a little something extra. It’s time to break out the snow pants. Snow pants? Yes, snow pants. Hear me out. I know they’re not the cutest of clothing items, but they will keep the wind and moisture out and the heat in. I have a pair of black ones that fit nicely over my jeans (similar ones here). I find the black color gives them a sleeker, more stylish look. When I get to work, I can easily slip them off and carry on with my day. Trust me, this is an item you won’t regret owning during the cold winter months!
Polar Vortex Essential Item #6: Blanket Scarf
Another great item to have during the cold is a blanket scarf. It’s truly a multi-purpose piece of clothing. I mean, it can be worn as a shawl or as a normal scarf or used as a blanket to keep your legs warm. The options are endless. Plus, it can fit easily in most purses when not in use.
Polar Vortex Essential Item #7: Boots
A great pair of warm boots is the last, but certainly not the least, in my list of essential items for the cold weather. To be honest, this is one I haven’t quite figured out yet. Normally I just wear my tall rider boots from JCP (here). On the coldest of cold days, I have some hiking boots (similar here) that keep my feet warm and toasty, but they’re really not tall enough for walking through the mountains of snow we have everywhere. I’ve heard great things about these boots from Amazon from fellow bloggers, although I haven’t tried them myself. Any recommendations?

Today, let’s get real. There are times when we all feel down and out. Hopefully, this is just a temporary feeling (if it lasts longer than 2 weeks, though, please seek out a professional counselor. They can help you!). There are a few small things we can do on days like these to help ourselves feel just a little better and put some pep back in our step.
#1: Throw on some high heels
High heels have power. I’m not sure if it’s the way we carry ourselves when we wear them or what, but I challenge you not to feel fabulous in high heels. Have you heard Kelly Pickler’s song ‘Red High Heels’? Check it out, throw on some heels, and go out and get it, girl!
#2: Layer on the lipstick
Lipstick basically has the same effect as high heels. Throw on some red lipstick (or whatever your signature color might be) and you can take on the world.
#3: Paint your nails
I swear by this one. Even if I paint my nails a nude color, I still feel better than when they’re not painted at all. I think it’s a matter of feeling more put together when my nails look nice. Plus, it doesn’t hurt to be able to look down at my hands and have them look pretty. Yup, painted nails give me all the fabulous feelings!
#4: Pull out the accessories
Nothing can boost your mood like your favorite necklace or earrings or bracelets or ring or scarf or purse or whatever your choice accessories are. So layer on those jewels and take on the day!
#5: Listen to music
Ah, sweet sweet music. Nothing boosts my mood like putting on some tunes. Sometimes it takes a few songs to figure out what I want to listen to, but once I do, I’m pumped!
These things might seem vain or selfish, but I would argue they’re actually not. Self care is a thing that should not be taken lightly. If you don’t feel good and confident about yourself, you can’t expect to be able to care for others. I’m not saying we take a spa day once a week and check-out from the world (every now and then that might be a good idea, though). I’m just saying take a few minutes to do something that makes you feel happy. Once your battery is recharged, then you are better equipped to take care of your loved ones.
