How to Survive the Polar Vortex

We interrupt this regularly scheduled blog to bring you this very important public service announcement…the polar vortex is here! Today, let’s chat about how to survive the freezing arctic air that’s enveloped our land. I assure you, we can be warm and still look cute. So, grab a hot beverage and a warm blanket and settle in!

Polar Vortex Essential Item #1: Cuddlies

Cuddlies are my top essential item for surviving the polar vortex. What are cuddlies you ask? Good question. Cuddlies are my cute word for long underwear or long johns, etc. I don’t care for those terms, so I coined my own. You’re welcome. I have a pair of cuddly pants and a cuddly long-sleeved shirt. The key is to make sure to choose a pair that’s thin (try these here). You don’t want anything too bulky. You also want to make sure they fit well. You don’t want anything super loose as you need to be able to layer other clothing on top. On the other hand, you don’t want anything too tight because you want your skin to be able to breathe and keep your blood flowing normally. There are tons of options out there, so pick one that fits your needs. They even have fleeced lined ones!

Polar Vortex Essential Item #2: Warm Socks

A pair of warm socks is another essential item for surviving the cold temperatures. Nothing quite works as well as a nice pair of wool socks. Wool is breathable and wicks moisture away from the skin. This is comfort at its finest! My favorites are from the Smartwool brand (here). You can even add some liners (here) for extra warmth. The key is to make sure you’re socks aren’t too tight on your feet and that your feet aren’t too tight in your shoes. The same principle as the cuddlies applies here as well. You want your skin to be able to breathe and your blood circulating normally. This will keep you warm!

Polar Vortex Essential Item #3: A Warm Outfit

Next up, we need a warm outfit. This is where we get to pull out our warmest of warm sweaters and pants. My go-to is a chunky sweater and skinny jeans. You could also opt for fleeced-lined leggings or wool slacks. Maybe you have a cashmere sweater that doesn’t get much use. Now would be the time to pull that baby out! Topping off your look with a scarf would be a great choice for a day like today.

Polar Vortex Essential Item #4: Outerwear

Outerwear includes things like coats, hats, gloves, etc. So pull out your warmest coat, preferably with a hood. Add a scarf, a stocking cap, and some warm gloves and you’ve got it made! Some people worry about their hair while wearing a stocking cap. Let me tell you, I feel that! I like to wear my hair as simple as possible to avoid too much damage from the hat. It doesn’t hurt to have a dryer sheet handy to calm any static cling that forms as well. Trust me, you’re hair will find it’s way back to its place and you’ll be so much warmer!

Polar Vortex Essential Item #5: Snow Pants

All the tips above will keep you warm for sure. We’re talking extreme cold here, though, so we’ll need a little something extra. It’s time to break out the snow pants. Snow pants? Yes, snow pants. Hear me out. I know they’re not the cutest of clothing items, but they will keep the wind and moisture out and the heat in. I have a pair of black ones that fit nicely over my jeans (similar ones here). I find the black color gives them a sleeker, more stylish look. When I get to work, I can easily slip them off and carry on with my day. Trust me, this is an item you won’t regret owning during the cold winter months!

Polar Vortex Essential Item #6: Blanket Scarf

Another great item to have during the cold is a blanket scarf. It’s truly a multi-purpose piece of clothing. I mean, it can be worn as a shawl or as a normal scarf or used as a blanket to keep your legs warm. The options are endless. Plus, it can fit easily in most purses when not in use.

Polar Vortex Essential Item #7: Boots

A great pair of warm boots is the last, but certainly not the least, in my list of essential items for the cold weather. To be honest, this is one I haven’t quite figured out yet. Normally I just wear my tall rider boots from JCP (here). On the coldest of cold days, I have some hiking boots (similar here) that keep my feet warm and toasty, but they’re really not tall enough for walking through the mountains of snow we have everywhere. I’ve heard great things about these boots from Amazon from fellow bloggers, although I haven’t tried them myself. Any recommendations?

That’s it. These are my essential items for surviving the polar vortex. What are your tips for surviving these cold, winter months?

The Secret to Soft Hands

Fabulous Finds Friday

Hey, guys!  Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!

Let’s talk secrets.  I’ve got a big one to share with you today!  Even in the depths of winter, my hands are as soft as a baby’s you-know-what.  How do I do it?  Simple, with O’Keeffe’s Working Hands Hand Cream (find it here).    My mom gave me a tube of this for Christmas (thanks, Mom!).  I had never heard of it before, but she assured me it was awesome.  She was right!  Aren’t moms the best?  I love that it’s not greasy, soaks in quickly, yet leaves your hands feeling moisturized.  It also doesn’t come off after washing your hands throughout the day.  That’s a huge plus in my book!  I apply it in the morning and before bed and that’s it.  Honestly, my hands have never felt smoother even in the summer!  Do yourself a favor and pick up this lotion today!  You can find it at most major drugstores and our grocery store even carries it!  I promise you won’t be disappointed!

Winter Protest

Hey, guys!  Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!

Today, let’s talk protests.  Don’t worry, we’re NOT getting political here.  We’re talking protesting winter.  Don’t get me wrong.  I love living in a place that has four seasons complete with snow and cold weather.  That doesn’t mean that I can’t stage a silent protest every now and then.  My favorite way to combat winter is by wearing bright colors.  Today’s outfit features a bright yellow tee that’s fit for a summer’s day paired with a pink tank, sweater, and necklace.  To add just a touch of winter, I threw on my skinny jeans and brown boots.  I gotta say that I’m pretty happy walking out the door in these bright colors.  Winter doesn’t stand a chance!

Winter Wear

Hey, guys!  Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!

Today, let’s talk coats.  Outerwear isn’t something we always put a lot of thought into.  For many of us, we pick out winter wear by asking ourselves one question…is it warm?  If the answer is yes, it finds its way into our hall closets.  Although warmth is a priority, maybe some other factors should come up in our quest for winter wear, such as fit.  Does the coat make you feel fabulous?  What about the color?  So many coats are shades of grey or black or brown, aka dark winter colors.  I don’t know about you, but I want to brighten up winter as much as possible and my coat choices certainly fit the bill.  Here are two of my favorite winter coats.  They are both wool and oh so warm!  The cut is super flattering and best of all, they’re bright colors!  Love it!

The idea for this post came from Patrice over at Looking Fly on a Dime.  She’s hosting a style challenge called Try It, Wear It, Love It (read her post about it here).  Every day she gives us a fashion theme, we try it and hopefully love it.  It’s all about finding new outfit combinations or pieces you’ve forgotten about in your existing wardrobe.  All are welcome, so follow along and participate on Instagram using the hashtag #trywearlove.  Today’s challenge is Outerwear, so it’s the perfect showcase for my bright coats!

Adapting to Winter

Hey, guys!  Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!

Today, let’s talk multi-purposing.  I love using items for more than one thing, especially when it comes to my wardrobe.  My challenge today was to use a summer dress for a winter look.  Starting with the dress, I added some brown leggings, a cream cardigan, and brown boots.  Not too bad, if I do say so myself!  How do you adapt your summer clothes for winter wear?

New Year in Stripes

Hey, guys!  Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!

Happy 2018!!!  I hope you all are having a lovely start to the new year!  Let me know in the comments below how you rang in the new year.  I would love to hear from you!
Today, I was feeling stripes to kick off the new year.  It’s been really cold and dreary here lately, so I was searching for, not only stripes but also a pop of color.  Never underestimate the power of a bright color.  It can instantly change your mood and the mood of those around you.  I remember one day I was walking down the street dressed in a bright pink sweater with a lavender tee and a springy pink, purple, and white scarf.  Basically, I looked like spring.  Did I mention this was in the middle of winter?  A lady stopped me and said I must be ready for warm weather.  Who isn’t, right?  She proceeded to tell me how much she appreciated my brightly colored outfit and that it brightened her day.  How cool is that?  I thought that was a fabulous compliment and it made my heart happy.  When I saw today’s inspiration photo with the fabulous pops of pink, it made me think of that day and I knew I had to recreate the look.  I don’t have any pink pants, so I exchanged them for some regular jeans.  The rest of the outfit I kept the same with the striped black and white shirt and black cardigan.  I added the pink tank and pink necklace.  I’m loving the finished looked and even better, it’s so comfy!  This is one I’ll be sure to have on repeat this winter!

The Return of the Yellow Sweater

Hey, guys! Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!
It’s baaaaack! Yup, the yellow sweater has returned! If you remember, last winter I had the hardest time figuring out how to wear this cute little item. Check out the previous posts featuring this sweater here, herehere, and here. Let’s see what the yellow sweater has in store for us today!
I was in some kind of sassy mood this morning. I mean, seriously, check out this outfit. Yellow and purple and animal print, oh my!  To be honest, I don’t know how I came up with this number. I think my thought process went like this. I wanted to wear leggings, so I grabbed a pair of black ones. Next, I opened my drawer and saw the purple shirt, so I grabbed that.  It finally feels like winter here, so I needed a sweater. Not wanting a predictable color, I gazed into my closet for another option. The yellow sweater popped out at me for some reason. Yellow and purple are complementary colors, so I figured that would work. Realizing this outfit was getting funky, I steered into the skid and threw on the animal print scarf. I got so many compliments on this outfit and had so much fun wearing it!

Would you wear this outfit combo?

The Winter Box

Hey, guys!  Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!
It’s that time again, time for the winter FabFitFun box!  Jasmine was excited too, so she’ll be helping me out today.  In case you’re unaware, FabFitFun is a lifestyle subscription box service.  Each box contains a variety of wellness, beauty, and fashion items handpicked just for you!  Valued at over $200, each box costs about $50, and ships every quarter.  You can either get an annual subscription or pay each season.  It’s so fun and brings me such joy every time I see the box on my porch!  See my previous unboxings here, here, here, and here.
Now that you’re all caught up, let’s get into the Winter unboxing!  Spoiler alert, this box was awesome!  It might just be my favorite box yet!  Let’s get into it!
BB Dakota Poncho in Black & Charcoal: $70
This is one cozy poncho!  It’s warm, stylish, and the perfect addition to your winter wardrobe.  Even better, it’s reversible with black on one side, charcoal on the other.  Stay tuned for outfits featuring this stylish poncho in the coming months!
AHAVA Mineral Hand Cream: $33
Who doesn’t need a good hand cream in the winter?  Everyone needs that extra moisture this time of year, and this fits the bill perfectly.  Packed with Dead Sea minerals, witch hazel, and allantoin, this will leave your hands feeling smooth and hydrated without being greasy.  After just using this for a few days, my hands feel soft as a summer’s day.  It’s awesome!
Pointe Studio Aloe Infused Cozy Socks: $19
Socks with lotion inside?  Yes, please!  These socks are great!  I wear them at night and my feet have never felt smoother.  According to the insert, these should last 25-30 washes, which seems pretty great.  Even after the aloe has worn off, these socks are so soft, they’ll still be great.
DOUCCE Freematic Eyeshadow Pro Palette in Smokey: $70
I love a good eyeshadow palette and this one did not disappoint.  The palette contains shades of browns, greys, and purples and also includes a stunning highlight.  The few times I’ve used it, the shadows seemed really nice and creamy and well pigmented.  The FabFitFun insert suggests applying the shadow dry for a natural, daytime look or applying wet for a dramatic, night out look.  I can’t wait to play around with this more this winter!
Homemade by Ayesha Curry Ceramic Mug: $16
Winter calls for hot cocoa, hot tea, and any hot beverage for that matter.  A hot beverage calls for a cute mug and this mug is just that.  There were a few options, mine is pink and says “Love You a Latte.”  I’m a sucker for such cuteness.  I have yet to use it but don’t despair.  I’ll be breaking this puppy out in no time!
Kate Somerville ExfoliKate Intensive Exfoliating Treatment: $75
Although I haven’t used this yet, I can’t wait to try it out.  This came just in time as I’m out of my other exfoliator.  This is infused with papaya, pumpkin, and pineapple enzymes to help improve the appearance of skin texture and pores.  It also is supposed to brighten the skin and reduce fine lines and wrinkles.  Sounds good to me!  It suggests using the product in the shower to allow the steam to activate the enzymes.  This made me happy as I always wash my face and exfoliate in the shower.  Don’t you just love when you find out you’ve been doing something right on accident!
Grace & Stella Anti-Wrinkle Energizing Eye Masks: $16
This is another product I haven’t tried yet, and I can’t wait to test it out.  I’ve always been intrigued by undereye masks, but haven’t made a purchase just yet.  Now I don’t have to!  These promise to bring elasticity and youthfulness to your eyes with collagen and minerals.  I won’t argue with that!  When I try these out, I’ll be sure to let you know how it goes!
8 Other Reasons Nine Lives Choker in Rose Gold: $58
This choker is on point!  Chokers are so on trend right now and this one is just beautiful!  It’ll go fabulously with the dressiest outfit or just t-shirt and jeans.  I love that FabFitFun always includes some jewelry in their boxes.  It’s great quality and is usually something that can be worn every day.  Look for this choker to be featured in an outfit very soon!
This Works Deep Sleep Pillow Spray: $29
This spray features a blend of lavender, vetivert, and chamomile to reduce anxiety and improve sleep quality.  To be honest, I was skeptical if this was actually going to improve my sleep.  It smells great, so I figured it would be a good room freshener if nothing else.  I was pleasantly surprised to find that this really does work!  I’ll continue to use it and enjoy sleeping like a baby!

Total Box Value: $386!!!
What a fabulous box!  I’ve loved all my boxes, but this one is my favorite.  I will use each and every product in here and that’s pretty cool.  Looks like winter will be full of testing out new favorite from FabFitFun!
