Holiday Outfit Ideas

My Style Monday

Hey, guys!  Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!
Comfy stylish chic holiday outfit ideas
Today, let’s talk holidays.  What should we wear?  My criteria are comfy, layers, and festive.  We’ll be eating a lot all day long.  I require leggings or a dress or something that isn’t tight around my waist.  That pecan pie’s gotta go somewhere, right?  Layers are critical when travelling to see family.  It may be freezing or it could be sweltering in their place.  Layers leave you looking cute and ready for any situation.  And, of course, we want to have some fun and be festive!  Once you pop on a cardigan sweater, the inspiration photo lends itself nicely to all three criteria.  If you’re not into the red and green, black and white would also look very chic.  For my restyle, I paired some maroon leggings with a white shirt and brown boots.  In one option, I added a greens scarf for a festive look.  In the other option, I added a brown cardigan and gold necklace.  Either would be a great holiday outfit idea, leaving you comfy and stylish all day long!

The All-in-One Palette and Why You Need One

Fabulous Finds Friday

Hey, guys!  Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!
Today, let’s talk skepticism.  For a long time, I was quite skeptical of those all-in-one palettes.  You know the ones, they have eyeshadows and blush and lipstick all in one compact.  I just couldn’t wrap my mind around having cream products next to powdery ones and how messy that must get.  Did I actually try it, though?  No, no I didn’t.   Was I missing out big time?  Yes, yes I was.
Last week, the Thanksgiving holiday brought a chance for the hubby and me to visit my family back in Kansas.  All the good food and good company are reason enough to be excited to go home.  One extra perk is that oftentimes my mom has a pile of things she bought that didn’t work for her, but she thinks will work for me.  Aren’t moms the best?  This trip she had an all-in-one palette from Revlon (find it here).  There are 3 shade choices for this palette; mine is Berry in Love.  It includes 6 eyeshadows, 1 blush, 2 lipsticks, 2 lip glosses, a mirror, and mini applicators.  The applicators actually aren’t bad, but preferably I would use my own brushes.  The mirror is a little small, but usable.
The colors are said to be universally flattering, and they are certainly very pretty.  The blush is a little light on my skin tone.  It does layer well, so with a little extra work you can get a good color payoff.  I wish the pan for the blush was bigger as it’s difficult to use a full-size blush brush, but it’s workable.  The palette doesn’t come with a highlight, but you can easily use any of the lighter eyeshadow shades for that purpose.  As I mentioned, my biggest fear was that the powder products would get all up into the cream products.  I’m happy to say, that has not been an issue yet.  So far so good!
My favorite part of this palette is the convenience.  This can replace 5 products you would normally have to include in your makeup bag with this one palette.  With holiday travel season upon us (and any traveling for that matter) space is at a premium.  If I can pack a product that saves precious space, that’s a big plus.  It’s also nice not having to think about coordinating your eyeshadow, blush, and lipstick choices.  It’s all right there, already optimized with universally flattering colors that work well together.  It’s quick and easy to just throw in your bag and go.  That I like and you will too!  If you’re like me and were skeptical of the all-in-one palette, just try it out.  You won’t be disappointed!
Have you used an all-in-one palette?

Have a fabulous weekend, lovelies!

Carry On Challenge: What I Learned

Hey, guys!  Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!

Today, I’m sharing what I learned from my self-inflicted Carry On Challenge.  See the previous posts in this series here and here.  In the name of full disclosure, we did not carry on.  We could’ve as everything did indeed fit.  However, we wouldn’t have had any room for souvenirs.  We love a good souvenir, I mean who doesn’t, right?  So instead we checked a bag.  I still learned some valuable lessons, which I’ll share with you right now.

In order to fully understand my story, we need to back up a little.  All the way back to 2013.  The hubby (who was then just my bf) and I took a trip to Barcelona, Spain.  Having never been overseas, I studied a lot on European style, specifically in Spain, so I had a good idea of what to wear and basically how not to look like a tourist.  My studies paid off and I had the clothes I needed.

Fast forward to a trip to San Diego in 2015.  I had been to San Diego before, although not in the heat of the summer.  Figuring I already knew what to wear since it was a US destination and I had been there, I didn’t do much investigating as far as what to bring.  Oops!  It was HOT there that weekend and I had cute summer pieces that were a little too clingy to be terribly comfortable.  Plus, the style there is so laid back and casual and everything I brought was a bit too dressy.  Did I learn from my mistake, let’s see…

Last year, the hubby and I went to Orange Beach, Alabama for our honeymoon.  Yes, to Alabama, they have beaches!  Don’t tell anyone, though, it’s a secret.  Anyway, as I was packing I thought of the typical southern style you hear about.  Super dressy and sometimes over-the-top, girls getting dressed up to go to football games, you know, these types of things.  Keeping that in mind, I packed dressier items wanting to fit in with all the cute southern girls.  Welp, wrong again.  People do not dress like that in Orange Beach.  It’s a beach town after all and people have a much more beachy, laid-back style.

Now for the current trip, Ocean Springs, Mississippi, which is just outside of Biloxi.  Yes, Mississippi, they have beaches too!  Figuring this would be much like Orange Beach, again I didn’t study.  I packed beachy, laid-back clothes to fit in with the locals.  Yup, you guessed it, I was wrong again.  Even though Biloxi is a beach town, it’s not exclusively a beach town.  People here were dressed much more like a typical southerner.  Also, it’s so HUMID there!  Oh so humid!  I’m talking actual temp of 89 with a heat index of 106.  So HUMID!!!  Everything I brought was way too clingy to be comfortable in such a climate.  I didn’t even have any shorts with me, because, you know, September.  Silly me!  To remedy the situation, I made a trip to the local Wal-Mart to purchase some light and breezy clothes, which was fun.  I was much more comfortable after that shopping trip!

The point is, even if you’re going to a destination within your own country, it’s a good idea to do some research.  What are people wearing?  How dressy are their clothes?  Are their clothes clingy or not so much?  What’s the temperature and humidity like?  Things of this nature.  It’ll save you so much time in the long run and help you fit in with the locals.

Carry On Challenge: Part II

Hey, guys!  Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!

Today, we’re talking all about traveling!  The hubby and I will soon be jet setting across the U.S. and I thought it would be a great time to challenge myself to pack lighter and carry on.  The first installment of the Carry On Challenge (find it here) was all about the clothes and shoes to pack.  This time, we’ll be tackling toiletries and the dreaded liquids bag.  Let’s get into it!

The most difficult part of this challenge is perhaps the liquids bag.  Known as the 3-1-1 rule, you can only carry on a 1-quart sized bag of liquids, gels, aerosols, creams, and pastes that are 3.4 oz (100mL) or less per person. The per person thing here is key. Luckily, I can use my hubby’s bag as long as I can fit all his stuff in first. Basically, I’m up to a 1.5-quart bag now. 😉 To determine what to bring along, I set out everything I wanted to pack. Next, I started weeding out the items that weren’t critical. After the first weed-out session, I attempted to fit everything into the bag. Lo and behold! It fit!

The rest of the toiletries were easy after that!  A few notes…because of the liquids rule, I opted for powder makeup instead of my usual liquids. This really saved on space in the liquids bag without sacrificing any style. L’Oreal has a really nice powder foundation in their True Match line if you are looking for something to try. There are also a few items, like sunscreen, that we’ll need to purchase when we get there. Mostly, I’m just super impressed everything fit in the first try!  See, we really can do this!

What are your toiletry packing tips for carrying on?

That’s all for today. See you guys Wednesday for another quick and easy fall craft project!

Carry On Challenge

Hey, guys! Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!
Today, let’s talk vacay! Vacation season is in full swing. The family and I are headed for the beach! Plane tickets are booked and the beach house has been rented. Sweet! Seeing as this is a beach vacay and we shouldn’t need too much bulky clothing, I propose to the hubby that we carry on.  We never carry on, we always check. This is mostly my fault as I like to be prepared for Every Possible Scenario. I thought this might be a good time to turn over a new leaf. Once he verified I was being serious, he just shook his head, chuckled, and walked away. This is a better response than I was hoping for and anyone who knows me well is probably applauding the fact that he didn’t just straight up laugh hysterically in my face. Fair enough, but I still want to see if I could do it. Let’s find out together!
First thing’s first, the bag. Remember how I said we never carry on? Because of that, we don’t have a piece of luggage that’s small enough. Oops. No matter, I found 2 possibilities. One is a backpack with so many compartments you’d never know what to do with them all. The second is a large duffle bag. My goal here is to see if I can fit all my clothes in one of the bags. Here’s what I’m packing:
This wouldn’t fit in either bag, so I guess I’ll wear it for traveling.

After some trial and error and mad folding skills, I got all the items into both bags! The backpack had absolutely NO more room for anything while the duffle bag had some room to spare. My only concern with the duffle bag is that it may be slightly too big. That would be a bummer if I ended up having to check it since it’s not very durable like a regular piece of luggage. At any rate, I’m pretty impressed with myself that I was able to fit everything in those bags!
Next time on Carry On Challenge, I’ll take on my toiletries.
