Fool Proof Tips for Hiking in Comfort

Hey, guys! Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!

Spring has sprung! I’ve been seeing daffodils in bloom everywhere. Trees are starting to bud, birds are chirping, and the grass is greening up. The world is coming back to life. I love it!

Spring is a great time to also get back outside and enjoy the beautiful nature surrounding us. Breath in the fresh air and get all that winter dust and darkness out. It’s a time to refresh and reset the soul. What a better way to do that than to go for a hike.

A hike you ask? Yes, let’s go for a hike! But what should we wear? Great question! It can be difficult to figure out what to wear for a hike (or any outdoor activity for that matter). I’ve come up with a few fool-proof tips to make sure you dress for comfort on your next outdoor adventure! Let’s dive in!

Tip 1: Check the Temperature

Through trial and error, I’ve determined that the tipping point temperature is 70 degrees.

  • Under 70 degrees I would suggest wearing the following:
    • Long pants
    • Short sleeve shirt
    • Jacket

photogrid_1555192674667389752176629016715.jpg

  • Over 70 degrees I would recommend wearing the following:
    • Capris or shorts
    • Short sleeve shirt or tank top

photogrid_1555192585578915296142734761358.jpg

Throw on a baseball cap and you’re good to go!

Tip 2: Layer, layer, layer

photogrid_15551924810891403189009705598198.jpg

Layering is the key to comfort. Even checking the temperature beforehand you can never really tell how it will feel out on the trail. It might be under 70 degrees, but what if it’s sunny and bright. Shedding that jacket might be just what the doctor ordered.

Tip 3: Choosing the right shoes

20190407_091541_00011453616938588095810.png

Choosing the right footwear can be challenging as well. Knowing the trail makeup can really help take the guessing out of what to put on your feet.

  • Paved Trails: Regular tennis shoes should fit the bill

photogrid_15551918916005015884973384532739.jpg

  • Unpaved trails: Hiking shoes are a great option on these surfaces (similar)

photogrid_15551917340415658730002073538694.jpg

  • Mountainous or rough terrain: Hiking boots are in order (similar)

photogrid_15551920158736222678900448473222.jpg

On another note, I would highly recommend changing into flip-flops or sandals when you’ve finished your hike. Why you might ask? Let me illustrate with a story. One beautiful autumn afternoon, I decided to go for a hike with my dog. The air was warm, but not hot. The cool breeze was blowing through the trees of red and orange. The fall wildflowers were in full bloom. It was a great hike. The trail was about an hour from our home. We were about home and all-of-a-sudden my legs felt like they were on FIRE! Seriously, on fire. They itched so badly. Turns out I had a really bad case of chiggers. Had I taken off my shoes and socks after the hike, I may have been able to prevent the infestation. Even if you don’t encounter chiggers, who knows what you may brush up against in the woods. Poison ivy, anyone? Case in point, remove your socks and shoes after hiking.

Tip 4: Hiking Essentials

20190407_092201_00013807913846856361647.png

Now that we know what to wear, what should we bring? We may think nothing, but there are a few things we want to make sure we have with us on the trail.

  1. Whistle: Yes, a whistle. In case you get into any trouble, just three short blows indicates an emergency. (here)
  2. Water: Make sure you have plenty of water. It’s recommended to drink 1/2 to 1 liter of water every hour on hot humid days. It’s still important to drink water on chilly days, too, although you may need less than indicated above. If you’re bringing your dog along, make sure you have plenty of water for them too!
  3. First Aid Kit: Safety first! You can make your own or purchase one from the nearest drug store. There are plenty of light and compact options out there. (here)
  4. Binoculars: Who knows what wildlife you may run into! (here)
  5. Granola bars: Make sure you have a source of energy out there on the trail.
  6. Backpack: You’re going to need something to carry all this stuff in! (here)

That’s it! You’re now prepared to have a comfortable (and safe) trip on the trail, so go out there and explore! Feel free to share your outdoor adventure pics with us in the comments or on our Facebook page. We’d love to see them!

Hello Spring Style

Hey, guys! Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!

So this winter was LOOONG! I don’t know about you, but I had some serious cabin fever setting in. Not just for sunny skies and warm breezes, but for bright clothes and shoes that weren’t boots.

At long last, we can finally start digging into our spring style. Today, I opted for my quintessential spring shirt (see it in another post here), jeans, and my new pink espadrilles. I didn’t even wear a jacket. It was fabulous!

What’s your spring style?

Thanks for stopping by! Have a fabulous day, lovelies!

How to Keep the Bugs Away All Summer Long

Bug Soother FTW

Hey, guys! Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!

There’s one drawback to the warmer weather. Bugs. Nothing can spoil a perfectly good walk in the woods like swarms of mosquitoes buzzing in your ears. Don’t despair, though. I have the perfect solution to fix all your summer bug blues!

Enter Bug Soother. This product first appeared on my blog last summer (see the post here). I truly love this product. It repels gnats, no-see-ums, sand fleas, black flies, mosquitos, and more. And smells great! I’ve handed out samples to friends, family, and co-workers. Everyone comments on how nice it smells. It’s safe for kids and pets too! Big thanks to my sweet sweet niece for modeling this fabulous product!

Inadvertently, I put this product to the test a couple weeks ago. The ticks are thick this year. Seriously, they’re everywhere. Normally when I go hiking, I put on Bug Soother and a tick repellant as Bug Soother doesn’t specifically say it repels ticks. Welp, there was no tick repellant to be found in my house. I had no choice but to proceed on my hike with just the Bug Soother.

With the Bug Soother in tow, the puppy and I set out on our adventure. It also happened to be mushroom season, so we left the beaten path and scoured the tall grass and woods for the elusive morel. We didn’t find any mushrooms. ūüėĒ On the other hand, though, we didn’t have any ticks! ūüėä Bug Soother for the win!

Interested in trying Bug Soother? Head on over to Bug Soother and enter the code ‘MissyAnnIA’ for 25% off your first order. You’ll be happy you did!

That’s all for today. Thanks for stopping by! See you guys in my next post!

Things I’m Loving

Hey, guys!  Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!

Today, we’re talking favorites!¬† I love sharing my favorite things with you and, even better, I love hearing about your favorites!¬† Make sure to share your top notch products with us below!¬† Okay, let’s get into it!

Bar Soap

20180510_ThingsImLoving_BarSoap

Bar soap?¬† Yes, bar soap.¬† About 4-5 years ago I made the switch from body wash to bar soap.¬† The original intention was to use the bar soap to make my own body wash.¬† Turns out, that’s pretty time intensive, so that plan never came to be.¬† Such is life.¬† But I had the bar soap, so I decided to use it up.¬† Lo and behold, a discovery was made!¬† You know how you can get those little bumps on your arms?¬† I constantly had those bumps on the back of my triceps.¬† When I switched to using the bar soap, though, those bumps went away!¬† Sweet!¬† Bar soap all the way!¬† My favorite brand is Dial as they have so many scents and it rinses clean.¬† Some other great options are Zest and Dove.

Weekend Indulgence

20180510_ThingsImLoving_Weekend

Since moving back into town, the hubby and I accidentally started a fun Saturday morning ritual.  It all started when a co-worker brought in some bagels from a local bakery.  Turns out, said bakery is only a mile from our place and is oh so delicious!  It was necessary that I immediately shared this new found treasure with the hubby.  And voila!  A new weekend tradition was born.  Now, no Saturday morning is complete without a trip to our favorite bakery!  This is such a special weekend tradition and gives us something to look forward to during the week.  Do you have a weekend ritual?

Children’s Xyzal Allergy Medicine

20180510_ThingsImLoving_AllergyMedicine

The warm weather is certainly refreshing, but that comes with a price for us allergy sufferers.¬† My allergies have been in full swing, complete with a runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing, and the like.¬† Bummer, but a small price to pay for the fabulous spring weather.¬† Allergy medicine is very tricky for me.¬† After years of use, Claritin and Allegra don’t work for me anymore.¬† Benedryl and Zyrtec Knock.Me.Out.¬† No joke.¬† I’m down for the count!¬† Xyzal will make me drowsy as well if I take a full dose.¬† After some¬†experiments, I found that I only need half a dose.¬† Instead of breaking all the pills in half (which never works to split them exactly in half), I opt for the Children’s Xyzal Liquid Allergy Relief.¬† It makes taking half a dose so easy.¬† If you have allergies that aren’t terribly severe or you’re sensitive to medication like me, I would highly recommend trying this out.¬† Have allergies?¬† What are your remedies?

Activewear

20180510_ThingsImLoving_Activewear

With the abundance of warmer weather, the puppy and I have taken to the hiking trails.¬† I was in need of¬†some new activewear.¬† Turns out, activewear is expensive!¬† Even looking on thredUP was not fruitful.¬† Seriously, I just need something to sweat into, it doesn’t need to be fancy.¬† Slightly begrudgingly, I turned to Wal-Mart.¬† I was pleasantly¬†surprised by my finds.¬† First off was this sports bra from Fruit of the Loom.¬† It’s oh so comfy and keeps everything in place even with the most intense workouts.¬† I also found this fabulous Danskin Now tank top.¬† This tank is so flowy, flattering, and will keep you cool.¬† What’s not to love about that?

e.l.f. Liquid Matte Lipstick

20180510_ThingsImLoving_LiquidLipstick

Seriously, I cannot stop wearing this lipstick!¬† I threw this in my shopping cart¬†on a whim and I’m so glad I did!¬† The formula is matte without feeling uncomfortable or looking overly dry.¬† Plus, it has great staying power!¬† I have the color Mauvelous (see what they did there).¬† The pun fits perfectly because this color is absolutely marvelous!¬† It’s the perfect neutral lip color¬†that’s just right for work or for any daytime look.¬† You need this in your life!

What things have you been loving lately?

That’s all for today.¬† Thanks for stopping by!¬† See you in my next post!

Come Together

When everything works out perfectly…

Hey, guys!  Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!

Don’t you just love when everything comes together?¬† I sure do.¬† It doesn’t happen that often, so when it does, it calls for a celebration!¬† Let’s celebrate!

20180509_ComeTogether_Closeup20180509_ComeTogether

It all started with this gray shirt my mom gave me for my birthday (thanks, Mom!).¬† At first, I thought I’d pair the shirt with a teal tank.¬† As it turned out, my teal tank was in the laundry.¬† What a serendipitous turn of events!¬† Instead, I reached for this orchid tank that happened to go perfectly with this choker from my grandma!¬† Talk about a look coming together!¬† Love it!

Who has the song Come Together in their head now?¬† Just me?¬† Oh okay.¬† ūüėČ

That’s all for today.¬† Thanks for stopping by!¬† See you all in my next post!

Spring Fling

The hot new color combo for spring

Hey, guys! Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!

Today, let’s talk about a new color obsession…pink and navy. Oh yeah! This fabulous idea first hit my radar while reading Bright on a Budget blog. She styled the cutest stripped navy dress with some pops of pink. I know I’ve been out for awhile, but I think we all remember how much I enjoy a good pop of pink! ūüėČ I loved it at first sight and was like, yes! I need that color combo in my life! Straight to my closet I went to recreate the look.

Would you wear navy and pink?

Spring and St Patty’s

Hey, guys!  Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!

Spring and St. Patty’s day are upon us!¬† Today’s look encompasses both.¬† I love light and breezy scarves for spring.¬† This one certainly fits that bill.¬† Layering is a must in the spring, so this white sweater over the brown tee is perfect.¬† Of course, the tank is the perfect pop of green for St. Patty’s day.¬† We don’t want to get pinched now, do we?¬† Is that even still a thing?¬† Skinny jeans and tall brown boots finish off the look.¬† There you have it, a springy, St. Patty’s look!

Do you wear green on St. Patty’s day?

That’s all for today.¬† Thanks for stopping by!¬† See you guys in my next post!

Dress It Up

My Style Monday

Hey, guys! Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!
We all know I love an outfit that does double duty. It’s fabulous to have outfits in your closet that can be dressed up or down with ease. I decided to put one of my summer favorites to the test. Our inspiration photo today is the casual version of this outfit (see post here). Let’s see how we can make this dressier, shall we? To dress to the casual version, I added a short sleeved shrug, heeled sandals, some bold accessories, and wore my hair down. Can you believe the difference that made simply by adding a few different pieces? Now, it’s your turn! What outfits in your closet can you easily dress up? Feel free to share them on the Facebook page. I can’t wait to see what you guys come up with!

Coral Explosion

Thrifty Thursday

Hey, guys!  Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!
Welcome to Thrifty Thursday! ¬†Thrifty Thursdays are days when we put the spotlight on pieces purchased from thrift stores. ¬†This is going to be a fun series, so let’s get into it! ¬†I love the simplicity and chicness of today’s inspiration photo. ¬†The coral jacket with the animal print shoes gives the outfit just the right amount of pop without being over the top. ¬†It’s just fabulous! ¬†To recreate the look, I opted for a short-sleeved coral sweater, a coral and white striped tank, bootcut jeans, animal print flats, a few bracelets, and as many necklaces as I could layer around my neck. ¬†On a side note, I’m really loving the layered necklace look lately. ¬†Case in point, I found an outfit picture from last spring (see below). ¬†Ironically, it’s almost the exact same outfit, which was not planned at all. ¬†I didn’t find the picture from last year until after I took this year’s picture. ¬†The major difference is the lack of necklaces in the rendition from last year. ¬†I guess we all go through phases. ¬†It’s just funny to see that front and center. ¬†Anyway, back to the outfit. ¬†The coral sweater and the tank are both thrift store finds. ¬†I love that you can find nice pieces that will really enhance your wardrobe for cheap. ¬†Plus, you’re giving those pieces a new life. ¬†Otherwise, they would end up in a landfill somewhere and it’s much better that they land in my closet instead. ¬†We all know I love the coral, and this is an outfit I’ve clearly had on repeat for awhile now. ¬†Love it!
