A New Way to Match

Hey, guys!  Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!

Today, let’s talking matching.  Remember back in the day when your shoes had to match your purse and all the colors in your outfit had to match perfectly?  This involved a lot of comparing making sure the shade of each item was just right.  I’m glad the fashion world has moved away from this matching principle.  Today’s matching is much simpler.  Instead of matching we just want to ensure the colors in our outfits go together.  This is not only easier but opens the door to a much larger pool of outfit possibilities.  It also makes each item in our wardrobe more versatile as we can “match” it to more pieces than we could back in the day.  Today’s outfit inspiration is a great example of items going together.  No piece in this outfit is the same color (the shoes and the purse are close but not quite the same) nor is there a piece that ties everything together.  The items just go together and look good together.  With fewer fashion rules than ever now, it’s a great time to get creative with your outfits.  Just start putting items together.  You might be surprised what you come up with!

The Hanger Challenge

My Style Monday

Hey, guys!  Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!
fall fashion black cardigan leggings boots easy outfit
Today, let’s talk about the Hanger Challenge.  You may have seen this post on my social media a couple weeks ago (check out the Insta post here), but, just in case you didn’t, here’s the rundown.  On a whim one night I turned all the hangers in my closet backward.  The idea is that as you wear your clothes, you hang them back up normally.  It’s an objective, easy and quick way to see what you’re wearing and what you’re not.  I’m both fascinated and nervous about this venture.  I’m also very aware that there are pieces in my closet that I don’t wear as much as I should.  Such is the case with today’s top.  I love that top.  I’ve had it for a long time.  It’s flattering, the detailing of the faux belt is fabulous, and I love the colors.  However, I know I haven’t worn that in at least a year.  Wanting so badly for it to beat the hanger challenge (hmmm, maybe that part of about it being objective isn’t exactly true 😕), I pulled it out of the closet this morning.  Luckily, I had just pinned an outfit that would work as the perfect inspiration outfit for this top!  Score!  As the inspiration pic shows, I paired the patterned top with a black sweater and black leggings.  Instead of the ballet flats, I wore boots which were by far the more practical choice for today.  The addition of a necklace and headband completed the look.  This is such an easy fall outfit, and even better, gave life back to a shirt that had been hanging in the closet for far too long!

How to Easily Create 5+ Outfits Without Even Trying

Hey, guys!  Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!
Today, let’s talk about efficiency.  I know, I know, we hear about efficiency everywhere; at work, at home, efficiency, efficiency, efficiency!  No worries, though, this is the fun kind of efficiency.  I’m talking about outfit efficiency.  When I saw the inspiration photo on Pinterest, I didn’t realize its full potential.  Then, I restyled the look and realized there’s a world of outfits just waiting to be created.  All you have to do is start by creating a column of black.  I chose black leggings, a black tee, and black sandals.  From there I added gray accents with the sweater, jewelry, and purse.  At that moment, I realized you could add any accent color and create a whole new outfit.  How about a red sweater with red accessories; don’t mind if I do.  Maybe some green would look nice?  How about pink or purple or white or coral or teal?!?!  The list goes on and on.  Simply by creating the column of black coupled with any accent color of your choice, you’ve just created 5+ outfits!  Now that’s efficiency at its finest!

Inspiring Yourself

Hey, guys! Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!
Is it just me or is the fashion on Pinterest getting stale? It seems like we just see the same outfit over and over and over again. When nothing is speaking to you, sometimes it’s necessary to inspire yourself. That can be a daunting task, but with a little practice, it can become easy as pie. Today’s outfit was inspired by me. Here’s how I put it together.  First, I opened the drawer to pick a shirt. This purple number was the one that jumped out at me, so I started with it.  This shirt has a boat neckline, so a wide strapped tank is a must.  I opted for a teal one.  For bottoms, I decided to go with jeggings and cuffed them to give them the look of capris.  When wearing leggings we must always make sure to cover our bums, so I layered a long, white tank under my tops.  I added a purple and teal necklace to tie the look together and finished it off with some blush ballet flats.  Not too shabby if I do say so myself.   This is a simple yet chic look that’s easy to create.  When you find yourself at a loss for something to wear, try starting with one piece and working it out from there.  It’ll work every time!

In the Neutral Zone

Hey, guys!  Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!

Apparently, it decided to be winter again here in the upper Midwest.  The snow’s flying!  Out of pure rebellion, I opted to wear a dress today.  That’s right, I’m not going to let this snow dampen my spring spirit.  The tall boots, leggings, and sweater add practicality to this otherwise warm-weather ensemble.  The color palette also leans more toward winter.  Although, it could go either way.  The key here is in the accessories.  The inspiration photo pairs the outfit with a necklace that has darker neutral colors, as did I.  This gives the outfit a wintery vibe.  Add a necklace with lighter, brighter neutrals and you have an outfit ready for spring.  That’s a big reason why neutrals are so fun.  It enables you to play around with accessories and make them the star of the outfit.  Who doesn’t love putting their favorite necklace in the spotlight, right?

Fabulous Finds Friday: Leggings Review

Hey, guys!  Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!

Let’s conclude leggings week with a Fabulous Finds Friday.  Below are the leggings I have personally tried and the pros and cons of each one.  Hopefully, this will help you in your quest to find the perfect pair of leggings!

Target

My first pair of leggings was this pair from Target.  I opted for the basic black, but they do come in a variety of colors and patterns.  With a price tag of around $10, there wasn’t much to lose. Oftentimes you get what you pay for and that’s definitely the case with these. They are not the best quality of knit leggings. After about a half season’s worth of wears and washes, they started to get holes in the seams.  Also, these are very thin and must be worn with a dress or tunic.  I would only recommend these if you are very skeptical about whether or not you want to jump on the leggings bandwagon.  Otherwise, opt for a more a expensive pair.

Target
Xhilaration Pants - Xhilaration fleece lined leggings black L/XL

Another option from Target is their fleece lined leggings.  Like the basic leggings, these also come in a variety of colors and patterns. With a price tag of $12 they are a nice affordable option but are only slightly higher quality than their basic knit counterpart.  One thing’s for sure, though, these will keep you warm!  If you’re like me and tend to run on the warmer side, only wear these when it’s super cold outside.  I would recommend these for those cold days when you need a little more insulation, but don’t want to put on a bulky pair of pants.  I find myself reaching for these often, especially this time of year.

JCPenney

These were a Black Friday purchase from JCPenney.  I had been eyeing them for about a month anxiously awaiting the Black Friday sales.  This pair of leggings has the look and feel of pants with the stretch and pull on nature of leggings, so they are much thicker than knit leggings. The price point on these is a little higher at $36.  Just be sure to wait for a sale and you’ll be able to snag them up for an affordable price.  These are probably my favorite pair to wear with tunics and long shirts.   If you’ll be wearing primarily tunics and long shirts with your leggings, I would highly recommend this pair!

These were another Black Friday purchase from JCPenney. They weren’t quite what I was expecting.  Clearly, I should’ve done some more research before making this purchase.  I was hoping for pull on jeggings, but these have zippers and real pockets, etc.  If you’re in the market for a pair of skinny jeans with the stretch of leggings, I would highly recommend these as they are super comfy and stretchy and basically fabulous.  Unfortunately, that’s not what I was wanting. These will have to go back to the store to be exchanged with a pair of pull on jeggings.  I’ll keep you posted!

Yet another Black Friday JCP purchase.  Can you tell I have a slight love for all things JCPenney?  I do love that store and I love these leggings.  These are a much higher quality knit than the ones from Target.  Additionally, these have a wider waistband making them extra comfy and help them to stay in place, and for a bonus it covers any extra tummy you may be carrying around from the holidays.  Regularly priced at $24, they are more expensive than Target.  But, let’s be honest, who ever pays full price for an item from JCP?  No one, I hope. I’ve seen them as low as $13.99, so just watch for sales and you can get these at a totally affordable price.  Of all of the leggings reviewed here, these would be my #1 recommendation.

I hope you guys enjoyed leggings week!  Let me know in the comments below (or on Facebook) what theme weeks you would like to see next.

How to Wear Leggings: The Shoes

Hey, guys!  Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!

Welcome back to leggings week!  This week we’ve been talking all about leggings including the various types and materials (here), how to wear them with dresses (here), and how to wear them with tunics and long shirts (here).  Today, let’s talk about the finishing touch…shoes!  You can pair just about any shoe with leggings from knee-high boots (my fav!) to ballet flats; the sky’s the limit!  My only reservation would be with tennis shoes.  I see many people wearing tennis shoes with leggings, and it looks great on them.  It’s not for me. Of course, I don’t wear tennis shoes very often anyway. They’re strangely just not my jam.  If they’re your jam, though, you rock it, girl!  Below are some examples of shoes to pair with leggings.  Which one is your favorite?

How to Wear Leggings: The Tunic

Hey, guys!  Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!

Welcome back to leggings week!  Monday, we covered the various types and materials of leggings (see the post here).  Yesterday, we talked about how to wear leggings with dresses (here).  Today, let’s talk how to wear leggings with tunics.  This is a trend I’ve recently dipped into and love! As soon as I purchased a couple extra, extra long tank tops from Amazon (find them here) I was unstoppable! I first talked about these fabulous tanks in my Comfort and Style post (here), so I won’t rehash all the greatness of them.  I highly recommend getting at least the black tank if this is a trend you would like to pursue.  It’ll be worth the investment of $15, I promise!  While dresses are best with knit leggings, tunics can be worn with any type of leggings.  Ponte leggings (leggings that have the material of dress pants but the stretch of leggings) would be an excellent choice here as they tend to be thicker than their knit counterparts.  Below are a few of my favorite tunic and legging outfits.
