Shifting the Pieces

Hey, guys!  Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!
Today, let’s talk about this striped shirt.  In case you haven’t noticed, I love this shirt (see it in posts here and here).  I still can’t even believe it was only a few dollars on ThredUp!  What a great find! Okay, enough of that, on to the outfit!  I’ve had this inspiration photo on my Pinterest board for a while now.  I love the looks of it, but never could quite get the look right.  Using my new-to-me striped shirt, I decided to adjust the patterns in the outfit a bit while still keeping the same vibe.  Instead of the striped skirt, I opted for a striped shirt.  Instead of the black top, I chose to wear the black as a sweater.  Instead of the jean jacket, I wore jeans.  See what I’m going for here?  I just moved the pieces around, and I’m really loving the results!  I wonder what other inspiration photos are lurking in my Pinterest boards just waiting to be recreated using this technique?  I better go take a look and I’ll keep you posted!

thredUP Does it Again

My Style Mondays

Hey, guys!  Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!
Today, I’m sharing another great find from thredUP.  This is not a sponsored post, I just really love the company!  What’s better than sitting on your couch, curled up in a blanket, watching TV, a coffee in hand, browsing through thousands of super affordable clothing options on your thredUP app?  That’s a pretty nice little Saturday (or any day ending in y for that matter) if you ask me!  We’ve all heard me say this many times (here, here, here, here, and here) but just in case you missed it, thredUP is great because it gives a second life to clothes that would’ve otherwise gone into the trash.  Do used clothes creep you out?  No worries!  The app lets you filter by all sorts of things, including condition.  Simply hit the “New with Tags” option and off you go!  thredUP is awesome, check it out!  Now, on to the outfit!  I often turn to thredUP for fancier items that I wouldn’t dream spending full price on.  This dress is the perfect example.  I work in a casual environment, so I have very little need for dressier pieces.  That doesn’t mean, I don’t want some dressier pieces.  This dress really caught my eye with its colorful top, so I threw it in my cart, and couldn’t wait for it to arrive.  As always, when I saw that polka-dot box on my front porch, I ran out to get it, tore it open, and tried on all the clothes.  This dress fit like a dream!  The top is quite colorful and was a little loud for fall.  Luckily, I found the inspiration photo on Pinterest and threw a sweater over it.  Perfect!  Not only did the sweater tone down the look, it also added warmth on these early fall days.  This is a dress I’m so happy I added to my collection and I can’t wait to wear it some more!

It’s All Navy

My Style Mondays

Hey, guys!  Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!
Today, let’s talk successful failures.  Yes, there’s such a thing as a successful failure.  Today’s outfit recreation is the prime example.  My first thought looking at the inspiration photo was to recreate the outfit by switching the yellow cardigan for a navy cardigan and wearing the yellow as a top.  That did not go well.  My skin tone does not lend itself to yellow at all and this was no exception.  I probably should’ve known better.  It’s never a bad idea to revisit things that may have not worked in the past.  Who knows?  It might work now, right?  Sometimes, but not this time.  I quickly came to grips that yellow and I don’t get along and moved on.  I wanted to keep the idea of my navy cardigan, so I scoured my closet for a top that would work.  Lo and behold there was a top just waiting for such an outfit.  I purchased this top from ThredUp a couple months ago and hadn’t worn it yet.  I was so excited it worked with this restyle and I’m loving this look for fall!

Let’s Get Crafty

Hey, guys!  Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!

Today, let’s get crafty!  This project is so chic and surprisingly easy and inexpensive!  Now, that’s a hard combination to beat if you ask me!  Let’s get right into the fun, shall we?

I was up to my usual Pinterest browsing one night when I came across today’s inspiration photo.  It looked easy enough, so I set off for the dollar store for supplies.  You’ll need 3 silver trays (I opted for the oval ones, but they have round and I think square ones too), wall stickers, paint (I used some craft paint I had on hand, but you could also use spray paint), wire, and hot glue.  I started off by painting the trays. The inspiration pic shows them completely painted, however, I opted to paint only the middle section.  After letting the paint dry completely, I took a 3-4″ piece of wire and folded it in half creating a loop.  I attached the unlooped ends to the back of the tray using hot glue.  After ensuring the hot glue was good and dry, I added the stickers to each tray.  Voila!  A cute and fun wall hanging for your home sweet home!

How to Easily Master a Flawless Eye Look

Fabulous Finds Friday

Hey, guys!  Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!
Today, let’s talk makeup. If you haven’t noticed already, I love experimenting with different makeup. One thing I still struggle with is creating the perfect eye look. Some days I do okay, other days I lack the time/energy/creativity it takes to make a stellar eye look. Enter quad eyeshadows, or, as I like to call them, a game changing life saver. These take all the guesswork out of where to put what color. They come cleverly labeled with a color for your brow bone, crease, lid, and a liner. Even on my most zombie-ish mornings, I can figure that out. Most major drugstore brands carry these eye shadow quads, but my favorites are the Expert Wear eyeshadow quads from Maybelline (find them here). They run about $5 and come in a variety of shades. The quality is fantastic as they are very pigmented and easy to blend. Plus, they last all day even on the hottest summer day.  No melting eyeshadow here!
I have this line in three colors.  Let’s take a look…
Chai Latte
My favorite is Chai Latte.  As you can see, I’ve used this so much that I hit pan on all the colors and even ran out of the highlight!  (Luckily, Maybelline has some great single eyeshadows so I could easily replace that color.)  Check out the instructions they provide on the back.  So handy!  This quad is great for every day and goes with everything.
Amethyst Smokes
The Amethyst Smokes is a gorgeous palette.  You can easily go from day to night with this one.  Just check out the shimmer of the dark purple and black.  Stunning!
Charcoal Smokes
Everyone needs some good gray eyeshadows and the Charcoal Smokes certainly fit the bill.  Another great palette to take your look from day to night.  Love it!
If you’re in the market for some new eyeshadow, I highly recommend these Expert Wear quads from Maybelline!  What’s your go-to eyeshadow?

Have a fabulous weekend, lovelies!

Bright Eyes

Fabulous Finds Friday

Hey, guys! Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!
Who doesn’t want bright eyes? You would expect to pay mega bucks for a great eye cream, right? Wrong. What if I said you can get a fabulous eye cream for only $10? Well, great news, you can! Here’s the story…
I’ve never been much for preventative skin care.  I mean, I cleanse and moisturize, but that’s about it.  One day at the grocery store I was procrastinating from actual grocery shopping and was perusing through the e.l.f. products. Yes, my grocery store carries e.l.f. makeup. It’s awesome.  I noticed they had an eye cream.  Feeling it might be time to start protecting that delicate area of my face, I decided to try it out. Specifically, I bought the Illuminating Eye Cream (find it here) for a mere $10.  I used it day and night until I ran out.  The stuff really works!  The dark circles under my eyes gradually lightened.   The puffiness disappeared.  I was noticing a difference.  The changes were subtle and gradual, but they were there. Just as I ran out, I got an eye cream in my summer FabFitFun box.  I started using that to replace my e.l.f. one.  I figured, this stuff is more expensive, so it’s gotta be better, right?  No, I quickly learned that logic is flawed.  The price of the product doesn’t necessarily indicate quality.  I used the eye cream from my FabFitFun box for about 2 months.  The dark circles returned, the puffiness came back, my eyes were not looking as bright as they once had.  At that point, there was only one thing to do.  I bought another jar of eye cream from e.l.f. and never looked back.  If you’re looking for a great eye cream or just looking to do some experimenting with skin care, I would highly, highly recommend this product!
Do you have a preventative skin care routine?  What products would you recommend?

Have a fabulous weekend!

Blue Jean Baby

Fabulous Finds Friday

Hey, guys!  Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!
Today’s Fabulous Finds Friday is all about jeans!  Oh, how a good pair of jeans can make you feel like a hundred bucks!  And oh, how a bad pair of jeans can make a good day go real bad.  Finding the right pair for you is essential!  I’ve searched high and low and my favorite jeans by far are from Target. They’re the Denizen from Levi’s line of women’s jeans.  The fit is superb, they keep their shape all day, and they are so stretchy and soft making them super comfy.  They’re just heavenly.  There are two different cuts to choose from including modern and curvy.  They also have a variety of colors and leg openings to fit everyone’s needs.  My favorite is the Modern Bootcut in Celestial (find them here). I even have them in two lengths!  I have the regular length to wear with flats and the long length to pair with heels.   I also have the skinny jeans in Bombshell (find them here).  If you haven’t tried these out, now is the time.  They are on sale for $15!  I promise you won’t be disappointed!

Hair Removal Cream

Fabulous Finds Friday

Hey, guys! Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!
Today, we’re talking mega surprises! Hair removal cream, to be exact. Here’s how I stumbled across this beauty. So, there I was at Target wondering around looking at all the fabulous items they have in store. Remembering I needed razors, I found my way to the shaving aisle. Now I’m pretty picky about my razors. I’m lazy so I like the ones that have the shaving cream on them. Those are pricy, though! A refill can run you about $20 for 4-5, maybe 6 if you’re lucky. My eyes just happened to wonder down to the hair removal creams. I haven’t tried a hair removal cream in years. Target had 3 brands all in the $5-$10 range. I figured it was worth a shot to try, especially at that price point. I opted for the Nair brand since it was one I had heard of before and it just happened to be the cheapest one. I purchased it and walked out the door excited for my new experiment.

Following the instructions exactly as stated on the package, I began the experiment. It says about 85 times not to rub the product into your skin, so I was careful not to do that. You want to apply a thick layer to the skin and let it sit for 3-10 minutes. I applied it to my legs and let it sit for 5-6 minutes. That seemed plenty long. I’m not going to lie, it burns a little. Nothing terrible, but it’s slightly uncomfortable for the last minute or two. If you’re sensitive to that, you might want to steer clear. Next, I removed the product with a damp washcloth as suggested in the instructions and rinsed the remainder off in the shower. Guys! This actually worked! I think the key is using the washcloth to remove the product and the hair goes along with it! I was truly amazed!

I’m not sure yet if this will replace my razor, but it just might. I can see using this product at the beginning of the week and then use an electric razor for touch ups during the week. The product claims to last longer than a typical shave. I’ve used this twice now and once on my underarms and I’m not seeing the longevity they speak of. It might last a day or so longer, but not more than that. All and all this was a successful experiment! I would recommend trying out a hair removal cream for yourself!
Do you use hair removal creams? Any suggestions for us?
That’s all for today. See you guys in my next post!

DIY Color Switcher

Fabulous Finds Friday

Hey, guys! Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!
So, we’ve all been there. That time when your favorite makeup brush is full of the wrong color. It’s got purple eye shadow when you want to use brown, etc. What’s a girl to do? Ain’t nobody got time to clean their brushes every time they want to switch eye shadow or even blush. Enter the color switcher. These are the latest craze in the beauty world. Sephora and Ultra both have a version that will run you about $20 (find them here and here). You can find them slightly cheaper on Amazon and Wal-Mart even makes a version (here). Even the cheaper versions aren’t worth it when you can make your own for a buck. That’s right, $1. It’s easy! Here’s how. Run out to your local dollar store and pick up one of those hair bun donut things (here). Unwrap it and you’re done! Start wiping your brushes on it when you want to switch colors. Easy peasy! If you want to go the extra mile, you can put it in a tin. I’m sure you can find those at the dollar store as well. I just happened to have this tin laying around that was waiting for its purpose in life. The hair bun donut thing fit perfectly! Now, how’s that for an easy yet super useful DIY?!?

This is by no means a replacement for cleaning your brushes with soap and water.  Speaking of that, I really need to clean mine.  How often do you clean your brushes?
That’s all for today.  See you guys in my next post!

Wet n Wild Photo Focus Review

Fabulous Finds Friday

Hey, guys!  Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!
Today, let’s talk beauty.  I’ve been dying to try the new Photo Focus line from Wet n Wild.  It claims to give you a flawless, camera-ready complexion complete with no flashback during flash photography.  The products are tested under 7 light conditions with and without flash to ensure picture perfect photos.  After hearing several You Tubers talking about how good this foundation is, I decided to bite the bullet and give it a go.  I went on a quest to find it.  Who knew it was going to be such an adventure!?!  I went to several Targets, Wal-Mart, a couple Wal-Greens, CVS, and a few Dollar General stores. You would think I would find it at one of those places, but no dice.  I finally gave up and ordered it online.  Ordering foundation over the internet is not one of my favorite things to do, especially if I haven’t tried the product before.  It’s so hard to see the colors accurately on a screen.  Luckily, Wet n Wild has a neat shade finder (see it here). First, you choose the foundation line and then you pick the shade name.  From there, the program picks the closest match in the foundation, powder, and concealer.  I went ahead and ordered all three together.  Let’s see how they worked for me…
Photo Focus Foundation: $5.99
This is one of those “your skin but better” types of foundation (find it here).  In other words, it’s a nice medium coverage foundation.  I do like how it wears on the skin and it lasts a full day.  I can’t speak to the flash photography thing, but I do think it’s nice to have something in my collection that could be worn during such events.  My biggest beef with this product is the applicator.  It’s shaped like a paddle.  To be honest, I really don’t know what to do with it.  The paddle is nicer to use than tipping it upside down and dumping it on your hand. However, it’s still awkward.  I’ve found this foundation applies best using a beauty blender so I just wipe the product onto the sponge with the applicator.  If you have other suggestions, please let me know!  Overall, this is an okay foundation.  I’ll use it up, but considering how difficult it was to find, I probably won’t repurchase.
Photo Focus Pressed Powder: $4.99
Again, this is supposed to give you that flawless look for taking pictures (find it here).  I have the same feelings about the powder as I do the foundation.  It’s an okay powder.  It works best if you apply it with a dry makeup sponge and pat it into the skin.  It does set the makeup nicely and is long-lasting.  Nothing groundbreaking by any means, though.  Like I said, it’s nice to have a product in my collection that will reduce flashback during photography.  Other than that, I’ll use this up, but I probably wouldn’t repurchase.

Photo Focus Concealer: $3.99

This is touted to be a high coverage, creamy and luminous concealer (find it here).  I’ve heard it may be a dupe for the Tarte Shape Tape (here).  The Tarte Shape Tape comes in at a whopping $25.  Clearly, I haven’t tried it, but the YouTube beauty gurus love it.  Who knows if it’s a dupe of not, but what I do know is the Wet n Wild concealer is very sticky and very quick drying.  Normally, I dot the concealer everywhere I need it and then blend it in.  There is no doing that with this stuff.  I dot it on and then blend it in immediately. In place of an eyelid primer, I’ll sometimes use concealer. You don’t want to that with this product as the eye shadow will not sit well on the concealer.  Highlighter will not sit well on top of this either.  The concealer is so sticky that the highlighter will just adhere right to it making it very hard, if not impossible, to blend out nicely.  It is high coverage, though, which is nice.  You just have to be very careful about where and when you apply it.  For that reason, this is another pass.  Again, I’ll use this up, but I won’t repurchase.
Have you tried the Photo Focus line from Wet n Wild?  What are your thoughts about it?
That’s all for today.  See you guys in my next post!
