Bottom Shelf Beauty

Fabulous Finds Friday

Hey, guys!  Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!

Today, let’s talk marketing.  I’m a geneticist, so I know nothing about marketing, but I do know stores want us to spend money (duh!).  They position their products on their shelves accordingly.  Just because a product is inexpensive and has a home on the bottom shelf of the store, doesn’t mean it’s bad.  Here are a few of my favorite bottom shelf beauty products!

St. Ives Face Scrub
I love St. Ives face scrubs (find the brightening one here).  One of my first Fabulous Finds Friday was about this face scrub (see the post here).  It’s gentle enough to use every day and does what it claims.  With a price tag of around $3.50, that’s quite a deal!  St. Ives lotion is also quite nice.  In fact, I would try about anything from the St. Ives brand.  Even though you usually find it on the bottom shelf, it’s a quality brand with good products.

Ponds Dry Skin Cream
This was a new find for me.  I’m an oily skin girl, but in the depths of winter, my skin needs a little extra hydration.  I saw this on the bottom shelf and thought I’d give it a try (find it here).  I’m so glad I did!  It’s a great moisturizer and looks great under makeup.  Even better, it only costs about $5!  Another great deal!  As the weather gets warmer (thank goodness!), my oily skin doesn’t need as much moisture, so I’ll be switching back to a lightweight moisturizer.  However, my dry skinned girls out there would love, love, love this product!
I love all things Suave.  From their dry shampoo to their shampoo/conditioner to their lotion to their hairspray to their deodorant, it’s all fabulous.  For some reason, these products are often found on the bottom shelf (oh right, because they’re inexpensive).  As far as I’m concerned, though, they should be front and center!
What are your favorite inexpensive beauty products?
That’s all for today.  Thanks for stopping by!  See you guys in my next post!

Milani Eyeshadow Primer

Fabulous Finds Friday

Hey, guys!  Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!
Today, let’s talk YouTube.  I love me some YouTube!  I can get lost for hours tangled in a sea of make-up, music, and more.  My favorite videos, though, are the make-up ones.  I especially enjoy Emily Noel’s videos (check out her channel here).  Her recommendations are always informed and honest.  You can tell when she truly loves a product and when she doesn’t care for it.  I appreciate that in a beauty reviewer.  She is always talking about (and using) the Milani Eyeshadow Primer (find it here).  I never thought eyeshadow primers were necessary.  However, after hearing her talk about how fabulous the Milani one was over and over and over again, I finally gave in and tried it.  Oh boy, am I glad I did!  I can’t believe how good this stuff is!  For starters, it’s only about $6 for a tube.  I’m guessing a tube will last a good year as I’ve been using mine for about 3 months and barely made a dent.  It goes on smooth and leaves a nice, even, blank slate for eyeshadow.  Not only that, but it extends the wear of the eyeshadow as well.  It’s the product you didn’t know you needed.  It really is fabulous.  I would highly recommend checking it out!

The Secret to Fabulous Hair

Fabulous Finds Friday

Hey, guys!  Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!

Hair beauty tips product review

Today, let’s talk secrets again.  We’ve been sharing a lot of secrets lately.  Last week it was the Secret to Soft Hands and this week it’s the Secret to Fabulous Hair.  To all the fine haired girls out there, this one’s especially for you!

Today’s secret was discovered a few months ago at my sis-in-law’s wedding.  I was getting my hair done and the stylist asked if my hair holds a curl.  My hair stay curled?  Ha!  No way, man!  Then, she pulled out a magic potion.  No joke, my hair stayed curled for 3 days!!!  I’ve never been able to hold a curl for 3 hours let alone 3 days.  What is this magical potion you ask?  It’s a texturizer!  I can’t believe I’ve gone 30+ years without knowing this secret!  My favorite so far is the Garnier Fructis Texture Tease Spray (find it here).  I’ve also tried and enjoyed the Not Your Mother’s Double Take Texture Spray (find it here).  I’m so happy the stylist that day finally showed me how to do my hair.  I’ll never leave home without it again!

The Secret to Soft Hands

Fabulous Finds Friday

Hey, guys!  Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!

Let’s talk secrets.  I’ve got a big one to share with you today!  Even in the depths of winter, my hands are as soft as a baby’s you-know-what.  How do I do it?  Simple, with O’Keeffe’s Working Hands Hand Cream (find it here).    My mom gave me a tube of this for Christmas (thanks, Mom!).  I had never heard of it before, but she assured me it was awesome.  She was right!  Aren’t moms the best?  I love that it’s not greasy, soaks in quickly, yet leaves your hands feeling moisturized.  It also doesn’t come off after washing your hands throughout the day.  That’s a huge plus in my book!  I apply it in the morning and before bed and that’s it.  Honestly, my hands have never felt smoother even in the summer!  Do yourself a favor and pick up this lotion today!  You can find it at most major drugstores and our grocery store even carries it!  I promise you won’t be disappointed!

Sephora Bold Lip Kit Review

Fabulous Finds Friday

Hey, guys!  Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!
Today, let’s talk lips.  Bright, bold lips to be exact.  For Christmas, my bro and sis-in-law gave me the Sephora Favorites-Give Me Some Bold Lip kit.  Spoiler alert, it’s fabulous!  The kit contains 6 bold lip colors, 2 of which are full size!  Gift sets are such a great way to sample different products you may not have otherwise purchased.  Next holiday season, I’ll certainly be checking into Sephora more frequently! Unfortunately, the bold lip gift set is no longer available, but we can still review the products, right? Let’s get into it!
First of all, let’s establish criteria for a good lippy.  To be a good lip product the formula needs to be comfortable on the lips, it needs to be long-lasting, it needs to fade well, and be transfer-proof.  Now, that’s a tall order, but let’s see what we come up with, shall we?

Kat Von D: Everlasting Liquid Lipstick: $20
Shade: K-Dub

This was my favorite of the bunch.  There’s just no getting around it.  The formula is fabulous, it’s comfortable, lasts for hours, fades nicely, and is transfer-proof.  That’s an A+ for all the criteria of a good lipstick!  It comes in 40+ shades and although this bright pink may not be everyone’s jam, I would highly recommend picking this up in your favorite shade.  $20 is on the high side of lipstick. However, if you purchase a color that you wear every day, it’ll be worth it.  The formula is that good!

Too Faced: Peach Kiss Moisture Matte Long-Wear Lipstick: $21
Shade: Drunk Dial
This is my second favorite of the six and luckily it’s full-size!  I’m not sure I would call this a matte lipstick, though, maybe I just didn’t let it dry down long enough.  Nonetheless, this is a fabulous lipstick.  It is indeed hydrating and so comfortable on the lips.  It’s also long-lasting and it fades nicely and evenly.  The only downfall is that it’s not transfer-proof.  However, that’s not a deal-breaker for me.   It comes in 20 shades, so again, if you can find one in a shade you wear every day I would recommend this product.  Just a heads up, it is part of the Peaches and Cream collection so it does have a scent to it.  If you’re sensitive to smells, you might want to pass on this one.

bareMinerals: Statement Matte Liquid Lipcolor: $19
Shade: VIP
This one just barely comes in at #3.  I really like the formula and it gets a big thumbs up on all 4 criteria, especially comfort.  This stuff glides on and you can’t even tell you have product on your lips!  The longevity isn’t quite as good as the Too Faced, so this one is third on my list.  This comes in 10 shades.  There are a few neutrals, but most of the shades are on the bolder side.  They look wearable, though.  Even this bright red isn’t over-the-top by any means. Check them out if you’re interested!  I’d recommend them for sure!

Tarte: Tarteist Quick Dry Matte Lip Paint: $20
Shade: Wannabe
They are not kidding about the lip paint in the name!  It goes on thick and dries almost immediately.  This color is so intense it looked like I was spreading dark chocolate on my lips.  No joke!  Again, this is a comfortable formula, lasts a long time, fades okay, and is transfer-proof.  Although the formula hits most of the criteria for a good lipstick, I just wasn’t wowed by this product for some reason.  It comes in 20+ shades, most on the brown/pink side of things.  This isn’t a bad product by any means, but I’m not sure about the $20 price tag.  If you can find it on sale, then I’d say go for it, otherwise, it’s a pass.

Bite Beauty: Amuse Bouche Lipstick: $26
Shade: Liquorice
First off, this is a beautiful color.  It goes on the lips as a deep, deep red with some hints of gold.  It’s gorgeous and fades absolutely beautifully.  The longevity isn’t bad either.  However, it is not a comfortable formula nor is it transfer-proof.  It comes in 38 shades with some pretty bold choices including a blue and a teal.  $26 is a lot for a lipstick, though.  Again, unless you can find this on sale, it’s a pass.

Nudestix: Magnetic Matte Lip Color: $24
Shade: Vino
This was my least favorite of the bunch.  Unfortunately, this was the other full-size product.  It is long-lasting and is transfer-proof.  That’s where the good things end, though.  It is not comfortable on the lips and fades terribly.  After eating, half of it was gone and the other half I basically had to peel off.  That’s not a cute look, especially when you’re wearing a dark color.  If you were going out for the night and wouldn’t be eating anything, it would probably last until morning. For $24, though, there are better options out there.
There you have it; the complete review of Sephora’s Favorites Bold Lip Kit!  Just to be clear, these all wore off after eating.  Some just faded better than others.  To recap, my top recommendations are the Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick, the Too Faced Peach Kiss Moisture Matte Long-Wear Lipstick, and the bareMinerals Statement Matte Liquid Lipcolor.  Those are all excellent formulas and well worth the higher price tag.  I’d highly recommend them!
Have you tried any of these products? What’s your favorite lipstick?
Another big thanks to Russ & Erin!  You guys always give such thoughtful (and bloggable) gifts!

The Best Tip Ever: Size Does Not Matter

Hey, guys! Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!
Today, let’s talk size. We have quite a complicated relationship with the labels on our clothes. They represent our internal struggle with what we want to be (or think we are) with reality. That can be a hard pill to swallow, but it doesn’t have to be that way.
First and foremost, we need to learn to love our bodies just the way they are.  There’s no need to compare ourselves to supermodels and celebrities. Anyone can look flawless with a team of 20 people doing their makeup and hair. We’re all beautiful in our own way, so rock it, girl!
Secondly, the size labels on our clothes are just arbitrary numbers and letters. Just because you might be an L and not an M doesn’t make you any less beautiful. Instead, focus on fit. No one looks good in clothes that are too small (not even the supermodels!). There’s no reason to try to squeeze into an M when you really need an L. No one will see the label and the L will look far more flattering.
I had such an experience shopping a couple weeks ago. There was a beautiful sweater on the rack. I picked up an M and silly me didn’t try it on. When I got home, I was so excited to wear it, I tore off the tags before I tried it on. Again, what was I  thinking? It was too small, but I tried to wear it anyway. Let me tell you, that’s not a cute look. Had I focused on fit and ignored the label, I would’ve looked skinnier in the larger size than the smaller one.
In other words, size doesn’t matter. Fit does, though. Let’s take the power away from those numbers and letters on labels and start dressing to flatter our bodies.
What’s your best ever fashion tip?

2017 Talk Fabulous Awards

Fabulous Finds Friday

Hey, guys!  Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!

Can you believe 2017 is over?!?!  I certainly can’t. I thought it might be fun to start off this year by reflecting on my favorite things from last year.  Most of these I’ve talked about in a previous Fabulous Finds Fridays.  Hopefully, this will help you make easier decisions when purchasing beauty products.  These are listed in no particular order.  Let’s get into it!

Jazzy Jasmine will be helping us out today!

This is my favorite dry shampoo!  It works great without leaving that annoying white cast.  Plus, it’s inexpensive.  This girl is living on dry shampoo these days, so having a cheap option that works great is the best of both worlds!  Check out my full Dry Shampoo Review here.

This moisturizer is amazing for my oily skin!  It’s hydrating without being overly oily.  The pump is awesome and allows for some serious control over how much product you’re applying.  One pump is perfect for me during the summer.  Two pumps are just the right amount during the spring and fall.  In the depths of winter, I use three pumps.  It looks flawless under makeup and it’s just fabulous! Check out my full review here.

Every time I try a new concealer, I always find my way back to this one. It’s just so good.  The applicator is pretty much foolproof as it’s just a puff that you slide over your face.  Easy and fabulous!  Check out my full review here.

This mascara is on point!  The formula is so easy to work with and leaves your lashes looking full and voluminous.  If you haven’t tried this yet, get in your car, drive to your nearest drugstore, and pick this up!  Check out my full review here.

Don’t be fooled by the low price tag on this stuff.  I avoided this for a long time thinking “Can a foundation that’s $6 really be good?”  The answer is yes, yes it can.  The finish is truly flawless and leaves your face looking bright and healthy.  I get so many compliments on my skin when I wear this product.  When you’re at your local drugstore picking up the Lash Paradise, pick this up too!  I talked about this foundation in my Beauty Favorites post here

These lipsticks are simply beautiful!  The formula is matte, but not drying.  They’re comfortable to wear and don’t budge (unless you’re eating some oily food).  Some of my favorite colors are Rebel Rose, Berry Recognize, and Missy and Fierce.  Check out my full review here.

Just like the Wet n Wild MegaLast lipstick above, this nail polish has some serious staying power.  Want your nail polish to last for days on end without paying an arm and a leg?  Cool, me too!  This is the nail polish for us!  Check out my full review here.

That’s it for the 2017 Talk Fabulous Awards!  What are your favorite products from 2017?

Thanks for stopping by!  See you in my next post!

Fabulous Finds Friday: FabFitFun

The Winter Box

Hey, guys!  Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!
It’s that time again, time for the winter FabFitFun box!  Jasmine was excited too, so she’ll be helping me out today.  In case you’re unaware, FabFitFun is a lifestyle subscription box service.  Each box contains a variety of wellness, beauty, and fashion items handpicked just for you!  Valued at over $200, each box costs about $50, and ships every quarter.  You can either get an annual subscription or pay each season.  It’s so fun and brings me such joy every time I see the box on my porch!  See my previous unboxings here, here, here, and here.
Now that you’re all caught up, let’s get into the Winter unboxing!  Spoiler alert, this box was awesome!  It might just be my favorite box yet!  Let’s get into it!
BB Dakota Poncho in Black & Charcoal: $70
This is one cozy poncho!  It’s warm, stylish, and the perfect addition to your winter wardrobe.  Even better, it’s reversible with black on one side, charcoal on the other.  Stay tuned for outfits featuring this stylish poncho in the coming months!
AHAVA Mineral Hand Cream: $33
Who doesn’t need a good hand cream in the winter?  Everyone needs that extra moisture this time of year, and this fits the bill perfectly.  Packed with Dead Sea minerals, witch hazel, and allantoin, this will leave your hands feeling smooth and hydrated without being greasy.  After just using this for a few days, my hands feel soft as a summer’s day.  It’s awesome!
Pointe Studio Aloe Infused Cozy Socks: $19
Socks with lotion inside?  Yes, please!  These socks are great!  I wear them at night and my feet have never felt smoother.  According to the insert, these should last 25-30 washes, which seems pretty great.  Even after the aloe has worn off, these socks are so soft, they’ll still be great.
DOUCCE Freematic Eyeshadow Pro Palette in Smokey: $70
I love a good eyeshadow palette and this one did not disappoint.  The palette contains shades of browns, greys, and purples and also includes a stunning highlight.  The few times I’ve used it, the shadows seemed really nice and creamy and well pigmented.  The FabFitFun insert suggests applying the shadow dry for a natural, daytime look or applying wet for a dramatic, night out look.  I can’t wait to play around with this more this winter!
Homemade by Ayesha Curry Ceramic Mug: $16
Winter calls for hot cocoa, hot tea, and any hot beverage for that matter.  A hot beverage calls for a cute mug and this mug is just that.  There were a few options, mine is pink and says “Love You a Latte.”  I’m a sucker for such cuteness.  I have yet to use it but don’t despair.  I’ll be breaking this puppy out in no time!
Kate Somerville ExfoliKate Intensive Exfoliating Treatment: $75
Although I haven’t used this yet, I can’t wait to try it out.  This came just in time as I’m out of my other exfoliator.  This is infused with papaya, pumpkin, and pineapple enzymes to help improve the appearance of skin texture and pores.  It also is supposed to brighten the skin and reduce fine lines and wrinkles.  Sounds good to me!  It suggests using the product in the shower to allow the steam to activate the enzymes.  This made me happy as I always wash my face and exfoliate in the shower.  Don’t you just love when you find out you’ve been doing something right on accident!
Grace & Stella Anti-Wrinkle Energizing Eye Masks: $16
This is another product I haven’t tried yet, and I can’t wait to test it out.  I’ve always been intrigued by undereye masks, but haven’t made a purchase just yet.  Now I don’t have to!  These promise to bring elasticity and youthfulness to your eyes with collagen and minerals.  I won’t argue with that!  When I try these out, I’ll be sure to let you know how it goes!
8 Other Reasons Nine Lives Choker in Rose Gold: $58
This choker is on point!  Chokers are so on trend right now and this one is just beautiful!  It’ll go fabulously with the dressiest outfit or just t-shirt and jeans.  I love that FabFitFun always includes some jewelry in their boxes.  It’s great quality and is usually something that can be worn every day.  Look for this choker to be featured in an outfit very soon!
This Works Deep Sleep Pillow Spray: $29
This spray features a blend of lavender, vetivert, and chamomile to reduce anxiety and improve sleep quality.  To be honest, I was skeptical if this was actually going to improve my sleep.  It smells great, so I figured it would be a good room freshener if nothing else.  I was pleasantly surprised to find that this really does work!  I’ll continue to use it and enjoy sleeping like a baby!

Total Box Value: $386!!!
What a fabulous box!  I’ve loved all my boxes, but this one is my favorite.  I will use each and every product in here and that’s pretty cool.  Looks like winter will be full of testing out new favorite from FabFitFun!

The All-in-One Palette and Why You Need One

Fabulous Finds Friday

Hey, guys!  Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!
Today, let’s talk skepticism.  For a long time, I was quite skeptical of those all-in-one palettes.  You know the ones, they have eyeshadows and blush and lipstick all in one compact.  I just couldn’t wrap my mind around having cream products next to powdery ones and how messy that must get.  Did I actually try it, though?  No, no I didn’t.   Was I missing out big time?  Yes, yes I was.
Last week, the Thanksgiving holiday brought a chance for the hubby and me to visit my family back in Kansas.  All the good food and good company are reason enough to be excited to go home.  One extra perk is that oftentimes my mom has a pile of things she bought that didn’t work for her, but she thinks will work for me.  Aren’t moms the best?  This trip she had an all-in-one palette from Revlon (find it here).  There are 3 shade choices for this palette; mine is Berry in Love.  It includes 6 eyeshadows, 1 blush, 2 lipsticks, 2 lip glosses, a mirror, and mini applicators.  The applicators actually aren’t bad, but preferably I would use my own brushes.  The mirror is a little small, but usable.
The colors are said to be universally flattering, and they are certainly very pretty.  The blush is a little light on my skin tone.  It does layer well, so with a little extra work you can get a good color payoff.  I wish the pan for the blush was bigger as it’s difficult to use a full-size blush brush, but it’s workable.  The palette doesn’t come with a highlight, but you can easily use any of the lighter eyeshadow shades for that purpose.  As I mentioned, my biggest fear was that the powder products would get all up into the cream products.  I’m happy to say, that has not been an issue yet.  So far so good!
My favorite part of this palette is the convenience.  This can replace 5 products you would normally have to include in your makeup bag with this one palette.  With holiday travel season upon us (and any traveling for that matter) space is at a premium.  If I can pack a product that saves precious space, that’s a big plus.  It’s also nice not having to think about coordinating your eyeshadow, blush, and lipstick choices.  It’s all right there, already optimized with universally flattering colors that work well together.  It’s quick and easy to just throw in your bag and go.  That I like and you will too!  If you’re like me and were skeptical of the all-in-one palette, just try it out.  You won’t be disappointed!
Have you used an all-in-one palette?
That’s all for today.  See you guys in my next post!
Have a fabulous weekend, lovelies!

How to Quickly Change Purses

Fabulous Finds Friday

purse essentials how to change purses
A woman and her purse. What a complicated relationship that can be, amiright? My whole life is in my purse. When it’s a mess, I’m a mess. When it doesn’t match my outfit, I’m also a mess. It puts a damper on the whole look I worked so hard to create. Usually, though, I’m in too big a hurry to go through the complicated process of switching it. So there I go with my cute black and teal outfit and my brown purse. Ugh!
From One Good Thing by Jillee
No more of that my, friends, no more! Enter the craft organizer turned purse buddy. This is slick. Jillee from One Good Thing turned a craft organizer into her purse buddy for all her essentials (see her post here). While I love this idea, it’s not going to work for me. I’m constantly throwing my bag around all topsy-turvy, it’s never upright. Does this happen to anyone else? No? Just me? Okay. Instead, I found 3 travel-sized bags to put my essentials in. Two were gifts and the pink one I bought from the dollar store. The dollar store has tons of super cute bags in many different sizes. If you’re in the market for a travel bag (or a purse organizer bag) I’d highly recommend checking out the dollar store.

Let’s get into the organizing.  First, we need to define our purse essentials.  This will be different for everyone.  Searching Pinterest for “purse essentials” yielded lists upon lists of must-haves for your purse.  I combined a few lists together and came up with my own purse essential list.  I gathered the items with the help from my puppy Jasmine (isn’t she getting so big?!?!).
purse essentials how to change purses
Cool, now that I have my list and the items, it’s time to bag them up.  The items can be divided into three categories (yes, I’m that organized, don’t judge me! 😉).  One bag will be for makeup items; one bag for the notebook, writing utensils, charger, and things of this nature; and the last bag will be for the first aid supplies.  Lo and behold, it all fits!
To change purses, simply pull out the bags and place them in the new purse.  It’s easy and only takes about 2 minutes.  Even on my most rushed mornings, I can spare 2 minutes for a good cause!  Big thanks to Jasmine the puppy for her help with this blog post!  She can be such a troublemaker (she is a puppy after all), but just look at that face!  She’s the cutest! 💖
What’s on your purse essential list?  Let us know in the comments below!
That’s all for today.  See you guys in my next post!
Have a fabulous weekend, lovelies!
