How to Always Look Put Together

You know those women who always look flawless? Have you ever wondered how they do it? Ever wonder if you could do it too? Those questions have certainly floated through my mind.

How do they look so cool, calm, and confident ALL.THE.TIME? I’ve scoured the internet to see if there was a secret behind their look. Turns out there is and it’s easier than you think.

Want to look put together every time you leave the house, so you too can appear cool, calm, and confident? If so, keep reading to find out all the juicy secrets!

Take care of your face

The first thing people notice about you is your face. That makes total sense as we’re making eye contact with people we meet. There’s a few easy ways we can take care of our face.

Have a skincare routine

Keeping our faces clean gives us a great foundation for everything else. See my skincare routine here.

Use SPF

Protecting our face is important to make sure we keep that youthful looking glow.

Mascara and blush are your BFFs

Nothing opens up your eyes quicker and easier than mascara. If you need to look instantly more awake, this is the ticket. To add instant color and life to your face sweep on some blush.

Don’t forget your lips

Colored lip balms add moisture and color to your lips giving you a more lively look.

Fill in your brows

I’ve written several posts about the importance of filling in your brows (here and here). Your brows are the frame of your face, make sure it stands out!

Take care of your hair

Our hair is the frame of our face. It makes sense that this is the next area that we need to pay close attention.

Clean hair is queen

This probably goes without saying, but we don’t want to walk around with grease balls on our heads! If you’re prone to grease (like me), dry shampoo is your best friend (see my favorites here). With a few spritzes, your hair will be back to its normal, clean self in no time!

Make sure you’re hair is dry

Just like we don’t want to walk around like grease balls, we also don’t want to walk in with wet hair. Nothing says lazy or I don’t care, like wet hair.

Style it

This doesn’t have to be anything fancy. It may just be brushing it and spraying on some hairspray. The point here is that we appear to have spent hours on a style that may have only taken a few minutes.

Take care of your hands

Research shows that the second thing people notice about women is their hands (credit Tero International, Inc.). This seemed odd to me at first. The more I thought about it, though, it makes sense. We are always pointing at things, using our phones, typing, and the like. Our hands are always on display. It makes sense that taking care of them will help us always look put together.

Moisturize

Make sure you use lotion and cuticle cream on a regular basis. This will help the hands stay soft and resist cracking due to dry weather.

Consider a mani

As hard as we may try taking care of our nails ourselves, there’s just no substitute for a manicure. You can’t believe the compliments I get after going to the salon. It’s crazy. The good thing is that manicures are relatively inexpensive. They clock in around $20. That’s not bad for having flawless nails in my book!

No chipped nail polish

Please, please, please immediately remove nail polish that’s chipped. Nothing looks messier and less put together than chipped nail polish. There’s some great options out there for long-wearing nail polish. Check out my previous posts on the subject here and here.

File and shape

Along with no chipped nail polish, make sure your nails are filed and nicely shaped. Again, having this done at the salon is a breeze, but you can do it at home too.

Clean

Nothing says lazy (and actually kinda gross) than dirty nails and hands. Keep a nail brush by your sink and you’ll never have to worry about this again!

Take care of your clothes

The clothes we wear send a message to those we meet. Wearing the right clothes for the occasion at hand is always important. Beyond that, though, there are a few things we can do to make sure we always look put together.

Fit is key

Ill fitting clothes never conveys that we are put together. It’s vital that we make sure our clothes fit our bodies well. Never mind what that tag says, no one will see it. People will see a piece that doesn’t fit well a mile away, though!

Wear dark jeans

To me, nothing looks more chic than a dark pair of jeans. This is especially important for professional situations.

Add a completer piece

I’ve talked about completer pieces before (here). It bears repeating here, though. Completer pieces can elevate your look from okay to fabulous instantly. Completer pieces include items such as a scarf, a necklace, earrings, a blazer or cardigan, etc. If you take nothing else from this post, take this to heart.

Style your look

It’s easy to add a touch of style to any look and all for free! Cuff your jeans, roll your sleeves, etc. These little touches can add a ton to any outfit!

Scuff free shoes

Always make sure your shoes are scuff-free and polished. This may seem old school, but trust me, this makes a huge difference. Next time you’re at the shoe store, pick up a polish kit. You won’t regret it (and I promise it won’t take too much time to have your shoes looking fabulous)!

Have an emergency to-go kit

This all sounds great, right? What about when we leave the house, though? What if we have a fashion emergency when we’re out and about? No worries! Enter the to-go kit! I have a to-go kit in my purse and one in my work briefcase. You can customize it to whatever meets your needs. Listed below are the items I consider essential in any to-go kit:

  • Brush and hair spray (maybe a hair tie and bobbie pins too!)
  • Powder and compact
  • Neutral lipstick (like this one)
  • Lint roller
  • Shoe shine travel kit
  • Sewing kit

Those are all the secrets to always looking put together. Take care of your face, do your hair, pay attention to your hands and nails, consider your clothes, and have a to-go kit. That’s not so bad right? Everything is pretty quick and inexpensive. Nothing here is going to break the bank or have you taking 2 hours to get ready. Now we can all be one of those women who always looks put together!

Big thanks and credit to the folks at Tero International, Inc. and the ladies over at Wonder Forest blog for the idea for the this post!

What other suggestions do you have for always looking fabulous?

Thanks for stopping by! Have a fabulous day, lovelies!
