Fabulous Finds Friday: DIY Cleaning Products

Hey, guys!  Welcome back to Talk Fabulous!

Today, let’s dive into the world of DIY.  I’ve been making my own cleaning solutions for years.  Partly because I appreciate knowing exactly what’s in the products I’m spreading all over my home, but mostly because I’m lazy and cheap.  Back before I started making my own cleaning products, I’d inevitably run out of cleaning product xyz and be forced to quit the task at hand.  As you all know from last week, cleaning and I don’t mix.  If I had the motivation to actually clean, stopping is not ideal.   I find it’s much easier to keep the ingredients on hand.  Also, most cleaning solutions are largely made of water.  I’d prefer not to pay $5 for a bottle of mostly water, right?  Today, I’ll go through my top 5 DIY cleaning products.  Without further ado, let’s get into it!
Daily Shower Spray: Originally from Pinky Has a Brain

I was first introduced to Clean Shower by my lovely sister, Morgan (hey, Mo!).  This was a life changer for me.  Who likes to clean their showers?  Not me.  Who wants to reduce the number of times one needs to clean their showers?  Me, me, me!  I was skeptical at first, but this really does work.  When I found a DIY recipe, I was ecstatic.  When it actually worked as well, if not better, than the commercial stuff I was elated!  Here’s the recipe:

DIY Daily Shower Spray
24 oz water
4 oz Hydrogen Peroxide
4 oz Rubbing Alcohol
2 tsp Dawn
2 tsp Dishwasher Rinse Aid (like JetDri)
Mix ingredients together in a 24oz spray bottle.
Shake to mix.
Spray daily after showering.
Admire the clean!
For best results, start with a clean shower.

All-Purpose Cleaner: Originally from And Then I Was Mrs
My next DIY cleaning adventure was this all-purpose cleaner.  This works amazingly well in all sorts of places and on all sorts of surfaces.  I use this in the kitchen, the bathroom, the dining room, on counters, toilets, you name it!  Best of all, it’s super simple to make, requiring only a few ingredients. Here’s the recipe:
DIY All-Purpose Cleaner
24 oz water
2 Tbsp Vinegar
2 tsp Borax
2-3 drops dish soap
2-3 drops lemon juice or essential oil (optional)
Mix ingredients together in a 24oz spray bottle.
Shake gently to mix.
Spray whenever you would normally use commercial all-purpose cleaners.
Stand back and be proud of a job well done!
Tub and Tile Cleaner: Originally from From One Good Thing by Jillee
From One Good Thing by Jillee is a great blog.  If you haven’t checked it out I would highly recommend it!  She has so many fabulous ideas, one of which is this tub and tile cleaner.  My feelings haven’t changed about cleaning the shower.  It’s awkward, cramped, and just not fun.  This tub and tile cleaner makes cleaning the shower easier.  Simply spray on the surface of the shower and floor, wait 1-2 hours, lightly scrub, and rinse.  You’ll be left with a sparkling, clean shower!  Here’s the recipe:
DIY Tub and Tile Cleaner
8 oz Vinegar
4 oz Dawn
Heat vinegar in microwave until hot.
Pour vinegar into a spray bottle.
Add Dawn.
Gently shake to mix.
Spray generously onto shower.
Let sit 1-2 hours.
Lightly scrub (if needed) and rinse.
Rejoice in the sparkling shower!

Carpet Powder: Originally from Mrs. Happy Homemaker
I don’t know about you, but I’m always paranoid about the way my house smells.  Who doesn’t love walking into a great smelling home?  Well, I want my home to smell like that!  The problem is that you get nose blind to your house smell, so your visitors are really the only ones who know the smell of your home (especially my brother.  If Russell tells you your house smells good, you’ve won life!). I’m always running my Scentsy, which helps for sure, but I want to take that a step further.  I found this homemade carpet powder on Pinterest.  Not only does it smell great, it also cleans and deodorizes your carpet.  That’s a win-win!  Here’s the recipe:
DIY Carpet Powder
Baking Soda
2-3 drops Essential oil
2-3 Tbsp Borax (optional)
Fill an empty parmesan cheese container with baking soda.
Add oil and borax.
Shake to mix.
Sprinkle onto carpet.
Let sit for 10-15 minutes, then vacuum.
Breathe in the freshness!

Floor Cleaner: Originally from the Project Fix It Up blog
I’m a big fan of my OXO Good Grips® Microfiber Spray Mop from Bed, Bath, and Beyond.  It has a microfiber mop head and a built in scrubber for those hard to remove spots.  Best of all, it has a refillable tank.  This enables you to use whatever cleaning solution you would like.  That’s a big plus in my book!  Here’s the recipe that will be sure to leave your floors squeaky clean!
DIY Floor Cleaner
8 oz water
8 oz Vinegar
8 oz Rubbing Alcohol
2-3 drops Dawn
Mix ingredients together in refillable tank or 1-gallon bucket.
Mop floors.
Marvel at your squeaky clean floors!
Note: not for use on wood floors.  I have tried this on laminate, tile, and vinyl with excellent results.

That’s all for today.  See you guys in my next post!
Happy cleaning!
